I usually don't even listen to them. Unless I know they are basically written like the Relapse era westwood "freestyles"

I just don't get into them. People like to debate who is the best, but you don't really know if a free style is written or what percent of it is written. Just because only 30% of it is written doesn't make it impressive. That only means you get to hear 30% of a decent song while the stumble over words the other 70% until they get to the cool written line again.

That's because the term freestyle has become incredibly vague. It can pretty much be anything from off-the top, to pretty much a proper song with no hook. It's weird.

I really enjoyed the 2009 and 2010 Westwood sessions though, they were great.

I'm aware of what range a freestyle can fall under.

But in general, when someone says freestyle, they mean off the top and people think of it like that.

But it is rarely off the top. Which is annoying. It's false advertising. Just make a song out of it and stop acting like your a talented freestyler.

Do most people really expect "freestyle" to mean off the top now though? The word is used so frequently on mixtapes for a verse with no hook, and for promotional songs like I'm Having a Relapse/Despicable that when I hear freestyle I instantly expect it just to be a written verse. It seems really rare for most rappers to even do "off the top" anymore.

I think of it as off the top. I know a lot of people who do. But, most people get excited about anything.

I see a lot of youtube videos with freestyles that are obviously completely written and they go crazy. No one just spits a 10 minute freestyle never even missing a breath of a freestyle. But people eat it up.

I don't even know who I'd say is a good freestyler, cause I think it's all written, so it's just a lie.

I think Big L and Jadakiss are really good. But they probably both write all their shit just like everyone else.

Oh word, I see what you mean more now. Yeah it's the shits when they try and play it off like it's off the top when it isn't. I don't think Em on Westwood is really trying to make us think it's off the top though, it's just them fucking around. I understand what you mean though, that is annoying.

There was a video of Kuniva and Swifty out and they got called over and this guy did like a 5 minute freestyle and his buddy was like "THAT'S OFF THE DOME TOO!" and Swift looks at the camera (which I think was Kuniva) and says "that ain't off the dome".

You can tell when Em is coming off the top because when he gets stuck he will say something like "It's the hateable undebatable unphaseable" shit where he just rhymes a bunch of words quickly in one breath. It's stalling until he thinks of something.

Eminem is arguably below average for a battle rapper when just going off the top...he's good at coming up with nice lines and remembering them but actually flowing on the fly, he's just aight

Yeah Proof is the best I've seen too. Amazingly smooth, he trips up now and then which is expected but he rarely pauses, it's just a continuous flow of rhyme and thought, and often... coherent... it's hard enough to keep it rhyming and flowing let alone make decent sense, and clever etc.

Em is average EXCEPT the 'Any Word' freestyle, which is actually the best off the top freestyle I've heard. He basically doesn't pause once, it's clearly all off the top, and his flow and delivery are smooth and dramatic; and the actual rhymes and lines are funny / better than some rapper's writtens.

I love how that ***** fagturd just steals every Eminem related video and re-uploads it.

If there's one thing I aspire to be in life, it's a content aggregator.

I want to upload Youtube videos with songs/content I didn't create and pat myself on the back if they get a million views.

always have achievable ambitions little buddy.

This is my favourite Em freestyle with Westwood and the way he fumbles on the last line of the last freestyle, he say's somthing like "aahh shit, Alchemist, cut that." I do thing of "off the top" when I here freestyle. If's it's a written freestyle, it's just a song with no chorus...the name is false. But listening to the freestyle make's me think that you have a mintute or 2 to think of something. then you just go with the flow, thinking of filler's.

I Also believe that Proof is a much better freestyler than anyone else. I really like Eminem's freestlying ablilty, but Proof is still better, seem's for natural for him, even when he was asking someone to jump in, his mind was sidetracked and he still rhymed well.
If you had one shot, or one opportunity, to seize everything you ever wanted, would you capture it? Or just let it slip?
