No. The day he does that is the day I stop listening to him.
That's what selling out is. People confuse selling out with 'getting bigger'. You can't help how big you get but the reason Em has never sold out is because he's always done the music HE wants to do.
If he waited for criticism and then changed the material to appeal more, that would be compromising his art for the sake of other people's opinions.
That's what fucking pop music does. Tries to appeal to as many of the great unwashed as humanly possible, along with a lot of Hollywood and other stuff by dumbing down and sacrificing being inane and tacky for the sake of more viewership.
Reason Em's music is so good is because you can tell it was made by one guy. A real artist. Pleasing himself, he's his no.1 listener and that's all that matters.
Which is also why you'll find a lot of the best stuff, in any art form is usually by one or a few people. The more it's compromised the more the quality usually goes downhill.
Some of the best comedies ever:
The Office (UK)
Extras
Monty Python
Curb Your Enthusiasm
South Park
These are all the visions of one, two or a small handful of people that see things the same way.
Em's music is clearly made by him, to entertain him, to amuse him and to satisfy him. And you can tell. Every track oozes with personal humor and energy.
Any other way would be shit.
Which is also why a lot of other rappers are shit. Because they forget that number one rule and try to second guess what people want to hear instead of just making music that THEY think is great.
But he did do a bit of ass kissin with TES & Encore. He was trying to appeal & please a new public that got sucked in by his movie. That's why he say's this is fresh & him going back not givin a fuck. Just wildin out

You could argue he tried to... Please the fans with Encore by following a formula I guess.
But with TES that's pure him I think.
Yes you had Without Me the first 'wacky' single but that's because he still obviously wants people to hear his music and is forced to make a catchy first single to sell records.
But everything else on the record is his pure vision. "White America", "Till I Collapse", "Soldier" these songs are clearly outbursts of artistic visions not in anyway compromised.
But TES was great. I also loved Encore but u know where that goes on this thread. LOL But my fav's are MMLP TES then Relapse

Eminemnow wrote:He actually admited to that. I'll try to find the article
I read the article. It was the Vibe interview I think, or the Detroit one, can't remember.
What he basically said was that with Encore he started to "tone it down" as in the offensive language etc.
Which is pretty obvious from the CD.
But I think that was a good thing because he was evolving. On MMLP he was genuinely angry and you could tell.
But on TES he had matured, found new directions etc. so just gay bashing and pushing buttons wouldn't of been entertaining for another two albums.
But all I mean is. Even though it was obvious he toned it down and consciously tried to 'deliver' a little more on Encore and fulfill expectations... He didn't actually COMPROMISE anything.
All the tracks were still HIM you know. His humor, his style. Still Em.
Can't wait for R2 anyway.
