Drugs did nothing for Em

Postby Blu » Jan 19th, '13, 04:26

I'm talking about his writing ability.

Over time he progressively became a better writer and crafted his best flows. The good lyrics didn't suddenly start filling up the page the second he popped a Vic.

He just took the drugs recreationally and whenever he performed live.

So when you think about it, people that say Em was better on drugs are idiots.

I agree about his technical skill.

I'll say this: I think the emotional experiences he drew from his time on drugs might have contributed to his writing during the times when he was still just using drugs in a recreational capacity. His technical skill, and witty perspective weren't a result of the drug use, but his moods that were induced by the drugs might have had an effect on some of his songs. That's a very limited argument though, and it would have only affected a select number of tracks.

You look at songs like "Rock Bottom". He would have made a great song anyway, with a similar concept. When he wrote about that song in Angry Blonde, he does say though that he didn't intend for the song to come out so sad. He also says that he just kept eating pills (he says Percocet, but other sources say Codeine) and it brought him lower and he just wanted to eat more. I think it's safe to say that they did affect his writing style on that song. Without them, he would have made a great song anyway, but it would have been different, even if the things he was talking about were the same.

I'm sure there are a few examples like that. Ideas that came to him when he was sped up on some X--he does say in interviews that him and Dr. Dre would lock themselves into the studio and just bug out on some Ecstacy for a day or so and then revisit it all to see what it sounded like--but again, that's in a very limited capacity. He would have still been a great writer, even greater perhaps, and been the superstar that he was without them. The tradeoff of a few songs and one-off style here and there for the years he spent fucked up and addicted says that the drugs have done more bad than good, I'm sure.

Some mushrooms wouldn't hurt that guy though. Needs a fresh set of eyes.

Yeah, I know...

Just one of those subjects I know a little bit about. I've also drank a significant amount of caffeine tonight, so that is definitely a factor.

You know, I don't see that argument brought up so much anymore...

There was a while there where people were convinced that sobriety had ruined Eminem for good. I'm hoping this fucker delivers on the next album, third time's a charm right?

Recovery was badass. So was Relapse. Just in a different way from the badassness of his first 3.

Oh no, definitely.

I'm just talking about the perceptions from the assholes. Then again, nothing ever pleases those people...still, I'm curious as to how this next album will be received amongst people who didn't like Recovery and couldn't get down with Relapse.

We'll have to see when it comes out... but I have a feeling it'll knock one of the first three out of the water.

If he raised the bar, who's to say he can't raise it more? Then his NEXT next album will have to be even better haha

I wish a freestyle would just drop man.

It's like it doesn't exist or something.

What if... what if... Em is filming/recording the freestyle as we speak? And tomorrow morning you wake up to the freestyle?

The only thing it helped him with is performing maybe. I think he had to teach himself how to perform without being high, because his '09 performances were kinda awkward

Ecstasy and alcohol did a lot more for his career than the downers like Vicodin or Valium.
I think a lot of the crazy "slim shady" side we just don't see much of these days was a direct result from eating pills and drinking vodka then just spazzing out. "I hit the studio and I admit I had a few in me, but fuck it, I roasted you, I ain't mad at you any".
