This comment on the site towards a poster who said he identifies with Eminem's material pretty much sums up this whole mess IMO. No one cares if people like Joni Mitchell or Leonard Cohen endlessly sing about their torturous relationships and cheating. But that's "deep" and "meaningful" because they're college-educated which makes everything they do genius.
Eminem's songs are personal, they have always been personal and I honestly believe that some of the backlash to his popularity and success has always been that he gives voice to the dysfunction that goes on in society and that he tells it from the point of view of someone who grew up in a trailer and flunked out of highschool. See, only well-meaning liberal "intellectuals" are allowed to talk about social issues and have it called art. Hell, there's currently a little privileged girl who makes banal dance tunes and is being called some sort of Messiah because she once went to art school...which makes her just pretentious enough for all the hipsters.
Oh, and this article also doesn't make all that much sense. IMO you could argue that he sometimes whines too much and repeats himself. But comparing these two specific songs doesn't prove that...because they're not alike. At all. One is about the fucked-up relationship with his mother, the other is about facing his drug addiction. He can be over one thing while still struggling with the other. That's not a contradiction, it's also not repetitive. BECAUSE HE'S NOT TALKING ABOUT THE SAME THING. Now if the article would have been about how Not Afraid sounds like a therapy session put into song, okay...But as it stands it's bullshit.
Sorry for writing a pretentious essay to answer another pretentious essay. I'm a literature student, we can't help ourselves.

ETA: And Eminem also isn't talking down to people in his songs, always out to prove how bored and cool and above it all he is. He's engaged in his music so I'm engaged in his music. But IMO that's another strike against him in some circles.
