For a so called "hiatus" he didn't do that bad in terms of output / success

Not to mention he was on a huge single with Akon on "Smack That" in 2006 that got mad love well into 2007. Yes Em was popular in 06/07 but since he didn't come out with much solo material, a lot of people over looked him.

And obviously during a large proportion of this time, he had to deal with Proof's death, drug addiction, near death, rehab etc

After Encore the only Eminem I heard was Smack That, and that wasn't even his song. So he really did disappear between that time and when We Made You was released.

I have a problem with calling it a "hiatus" in general because he didn't do it by choice...he was walking around zombified from pills for 4-5 years. The real him was being held hostage by the pill aliens during that time span.

Why is kanyes overrated album being brought up? I'm a big kanye fan, but his album was probably his laziest to date. His voice must be on it for like 15-20 minutes

Top 10 Hits Post-Encore (but before Relapse)

(#8 US) / (#4 UK)

(#6)

And of course, Smack That.

And also, this. Not quite top 10, but close....

YOU DON'T KNOW - #12

Em did better than a lot of rappers in his "hiatus" than they have in their whole career.

And albums don't just come out of nowhere. There is build-up / hype / promotion for them and everyone knew since 2008 Em was coming with a new album.

Jay-Z is probably one of the most well known / mainstream / popular rappers after Em right?

He didn't even have a #1 single until 2009, with Empire State Of Mind.

My only argument is he didn't "disappear" for five years - that is bullshit. You only have to look at the dates and work it out for yourself to realise that.

^ I forgot all about When I'm Gone :sweating: But You Don't Know wasn't big where I at, Shake That was even more less successful. And I didn't know about a new album until We Made You was out. So to ME, Em really was on the low...

No album for almost 5 years is the hiatus. Just because you have a fucking song a year doesn't mean you're active :facepalm. Flava Flav probably puts out a song a year, if he still raps, doesn't mean they are actively involved in music in that time period.

And just so people realize this, cause I know some people don't, everyone needs a break. From 1998-2005 he was active for the most part, and did a lot for hip hop. He even said himself that he went 7/8 years without any big break. You see a lot of hip hop artists don't put out albums for awhile, or people have hiatuses, breaks, death of family members, retirement, personal issues, label conflicts, etc.

Xzibit hasn't had an album out since 2006- almost 6 years ago.
Ja Rule has taken a lot of time off.
Obviously Dr. Dre hasn't had a fucking record since 1999, and before that, it took him 7 years for his first album to drop.

Shit happens.

Ok, fair enough.

But to say he had three top 10 singles (almost four) during his "hiatus", that is impressive.

You can't argue against top ten singles

You can't even say Re-Up, their are only 4 full tracks, an intro skit, a verse on We're Back, a remix of an Eminem song, same verse by him as before, a minute long song in PE#1.

It's like an Eminem EP and the rest of the songs are just people on Shady over Em, Alchemist beats.

Yeah, you've changed the context of the point I was trying to make though.

The "Crazy Frog" was a number one single, charts don't mean fuck all in terms of determing good or bad music, it never has. But in the context of this thread and the point I am trying to prove, three (almost four) top 10 singles for Eminem during his 'hiatus' proves that he did quite well, and still relevant....even when he wasn't THAT active as a musician.

Which rappers have the most top 10 singles in the US? (their whole career)

Em has 3, in his hiatus alone.

Well........?

It was a hiatus

i agree it was still more of a haitus than it wasnt, but to say who the hell knew those songs? touchdown was on the radio, but wasnt a big deal, peep show was played alot, as well as smack that. the last 2 were played all the time. so if someone listened to rap on the radio, you heard at least smack that and peep show. no one gave a fuck? i remember many talking aobut him on smack that, liking it or not, they talked about it...same with peep show
