Relapse is definitely above Recovery in this field.

then what is, according to you? depends how you define lyrical, anyway. the way i see it, the SSLP has better story-telling, MMLP and TES have great lyricism with a hard-hitting personal twist and relapse has very clever rhymes, but recovery has such an abundance of clever punchlines and a jungle of metaphores that is so dense that you discover new ones almost upon every listen. to me, that's lyrical.

I think that Recovery is his most mainstream album. All Eminems albums are lyrical, that`s why he is the best. MMLP/TES, like it has been said a thousand times, are his best. Those albums have everything. Lyrics, humor, anger, subject matter... Relapse is a rhyming wonder. And SSLP is close to MMLP and TES.

yes, relapse is a rhyming wonder, i agree with that. clever rhymes. but recovery's lyricism is different, more complex than just complex rhymes. it has metaphores that are so clever that you don't even grasp them before hearing them several times, often many times. maybe it's just me, but i really love that stuff.

Fuck it,i couldnt resist.

i really hope i am getting trolled or something here,i really do.

Rhyming is a form of lyricism, thats off the top wrong of you, rappers have to keep rhythym in what they say hence why they rhyme and go for longer strings of rhyming, there should be good rhyming for a song to be good, thats a fucking requirement if you are judging from a technical level obviously?

Im sorry but i never seemed to have no cheap pun Em said make me scratch my head during the entire album, metaphors are mostly not that clever anyway, can u please direct me to only 2 "so clever" ones?

obviously its just you, have you seen your posts?

Eminem does have some funny and good puns though.

The decapitated line on Fast Lane was really funny. :flutter:

@Da nah I won't waste time explaining why his punchlines are wack though.

Well I like that stuff too, and Recovery has some great writing. But I'd say you're way over-praising the metaphors and punchlines. It has some bad punchlines, some good punchlines and some great ones, and some nice metaphors. It has some brilliant flows and some great song-writing too, and he really knocked it out the park with some of the verses and ideas.

He really did try to make it a meaty sandwich of lyrics but... due to the fact he shifted his perspective and tone in order to try and adapt and present himself in a more modern way, some of the stuff is compromised and a little watered down and cheesy, for him. I wouldn't say the metaphors are overly complex or so dense that they're hard to figure out as you're making out either. It's just wordplay, double entendres, puns etc. but it's executed with clarity. So is clear.

Relapse is more than just clever rhyming. He may of used psychopathy as an excuse to write complex lyrics again but there's so much nuance and detail in the writing, there's a finesse to it that is different than anything else he has ever done. It was a new character and mindset, Shady being used as a metaphor for evil - but he became more than just a class clown, or a randomly mean guy with a jokey persona... he became a deplorable, gleeful, self-analytical lunatic... he treated serial-killing like an art. Some of the assonance and thoughts are so brilliant.

Lyrical isn't just about wordplay and puns, it's frankly harder to write in detail and with conceptual appreciation, on Relapse; he wrote like a writer. There's elements of real literature to it.

It's also exciting artistically as he doesn't make an excuse for or sidestep the idea of indulging in character. Where as before he'd have a few lines of psychopathic ideas or behaviour, but he'd then make you second-guess him or try to justify something he said... on Relapse, he just totally loses himself in the mindset. Which to me, is better art.

Just like Kanye lost himself in My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. It's more extreme, just pure indulgence - unapologetic indulgence and there's arguably more depth in an artist who does that. As he / she is allowing the art to take over, putting a precedence on more important aspects (tone, mood etc.) and allowing themselves total freedom in their work.

Which is why I was so excited to hear Relapse 2, how extreme and artistic it could of been and why I was excited that Eminem was beginning to be the artist he once was. Like with The Slim Shady LP and The Marshall Mathers LP - he didn't make an exception for his work, he gave it totally overbearing respect above everything. Which is why it's so extreme and brilliant.

He was becoming that artist again, which is why... despite how good some of Recovery is - it's ironically, 12 steps backwards.

this is what happens when you have a teeny tiny penis and no balls. frustration builds up and you get angry and mad at the world, but because you're a coward you have to take it out on women online, sitting safely behind your computer desk. sad. :( my condolances.
