It's the reason Em is still streets ahead of many others around at the moment. From my perspective, anyway.

Kendrick is dope, though. Em should do a song with him, seriously. Some real competition on a track for once.

But Em was pretty bad at staying on beat in his first two albums. He has always said that he used to completely override it. He's become a lot better at riding beats, especially since he started producing his own tracks.

Riding a beat takes absolutely no talent whatsoever. Any halfwit can ride a beat. Fucking Ke$ha rides every beat.

Eminem started out as a teenager using that generic eighth note-humping flow that every pop rapper and netcee uses and evolved beyond that.

And he made the statement you're referring to back when he was starting to develop writers block (2002) and was trying to make excuses for why he could no longer come up with creative flows and had to settle for generic, monotonous deliveries. The Eminem Show was already out and he was in the process of trying to force songs like "We As Americans" and "Monkey See Monkey Do."

The only reason you hear netcees and pop rappers use the eighth-note flow is because that's the easiest type of flow to pick up on, especially when most netcees and pop rappers aren't very experienced and don't have the skill necessary to develop a unique flow and whatnot...

Why do you even have a 2Chainz album in your possession?
"So one last time, I'm back, 'fore it fades into black and it's all over, behold the final chapter in the saga, trying to recapture that lightning trapped in a bottle twice, the magic that started it all...tragic portrait of an artist tortured....trapped in his own drawings..." - Bruce.

Em's flows on his first 2 albums were amazing and so unique. It's one of the main reasons why I hold him in such high regards.

Most of these mainstream rappers just don't have that hunger. Eminem was clearly hungry back in those years, even when he had it all. How many people in general do we know that have THAT level of passion and dedication? And it payed off, because look at the verses he wrote back then. You don't pick up a pen and write that shit naturally, you need to constantly work on it and scrutinize everything you do. Em even says it himself, he sees it as a puzzle, and he likes sandwiching in rhymes. The only reason why it sounded like it all came naturally is because he worked on his skills so much to the point where it WAS natural for him to think of all those rhymes in a complicated fashion. You have to be obsessed, mixed with a little bit of insanity, really.

Can you prove that this was when he first made that statement? It strikes a bell, but I recall him saying fairly recently, perhaps in a post-Relapse interview.
In any case, listen to a track like Kill You. He has exceptional flow, no doubt, but the beat does not match the verses at all. It's indubitable.
"Oh, he'll give us what we need.
It may not be what we want."
