Whenever Em is in character, he tends to rap the way you all want him to. Slim Shady LP he was Slim Shady, MMLP he was a combination of Em and Shady. The Eminem Show was mainly Marshall. Not Afraid has somewhat of a TES/Encore tone because this is a "Marshall" song, where he's true to himself. Relapse, he was a serial killer reincarnation of Shady, so he was rapping in character. When he's in character, he tells stories. I hope Recovery has some personal tracks as well as storytelling tracks. Like someone said above, Lose Yourself is a kind of personal track, but he's in the Jimmy Smith character, which is why it's not only one of his best songs but his popular songs too. He's the "serious" Em that everyone likes, while having amazing word play and verses, because he's switching between himself and Jimmy throughout the song
Came back to annihilate, the game's in dire straights, as I await
Word on Satan, as I drop, fall to my knees before this Quija board and I pray
Now I lay me down to sleep
I do this shit in my sleep, I’m sleepin' now, imagine if I awake
Props to randomgirl for the sig.
