Being realistic, to have the same effect and legacy, he'd have to take what he had in 2002, maybe up it, and then keep it going for a couple of decades. Em couldnt take a few years, MJ had it since a kid, you can't blame the guy for having problems.

tam_91 wrote:I wouldn't be surprised when he dies. Let's face it, before MJ died, hardly anyone talked about him (years after he ended his music career), people were happy call him a child molester even after his trials (albeit a minority), he was basically like any other top retired popstar: good to listen to back in the days, but moved onto newer music.

But then he suddenly dies, and the whole world is talking about him, his old popular tracks rise through the charts again, hypocrites ( previous MJ bashers) unfold and he gets legendary status.

Now I'm not saying it'll happen to Eminem, but who knows. Music artists get A LOT of attention when the die.

You're right about the resurgence of popularity after MJ's death, but even before Jackson's passing he had already accomplished more from a commercial and world-wide recognition standpoint than Eminem (or any other rapper in this era of society) ever will. And you might be underestimating how many people still loved him all around the world even as he had become a laughingstock in the states and other Western nations. If Michael Jackson wasn't as big as Michael Jackson was, then the scandals wouldn't be as big as they were either.

When artists drop from the height of their popularity, people always say "only diehard fans of so and so still listen to him," but with Michael Jackson the number of his diehard fans are probably above the number of overall fans that most other artists have. It's my belief that even if he hadn't died tragically, time would pass and he would be remembered for his music more so than the controversies, especially within future generations who weren't even around during the trial. He wasn't just a popular singer but a massive universal cultural figure. There is just no way for Em to match that and it's an unfair comparison to make given the nature of the type of music Eminem does and the type of performer he is. I do think Em will become an American icon (if he isn't one already), and I think he already is the biggest rap star of all-time, but the worldwide status of Michael Jackson? Fuck no. The Thriller album alone sold more than Em's overall sales from his entire career if the given sales for both of them are correct. And if they are correct, then you're comparing someone who sold over 750 million records in their lifetime to someone who sold over 80 mil. It's just... not happenin'. Illegal downloading cannot be held responsible for THAT big of a difference. And yeah, selling over 80 million records is a big fucking deal and it makes Eminem a commercial monster. So just imagine where MJ is at in that regard.

And I might be an MJ stan but I'm just as big of an Eminem stan. Anyone who looks at this shit reasonably would arrive at the same conclusion.

But, if you're looking at just the United States, he might come close, but probably post mortem.

He won't be as famous as MJ, but imo eminem is better than MJ in everything. except dancing lol
They claim that I'm violent, just cause I refuse to be silent
These hypocrites are havin fits, cause I'm not buyin it
Defyin it, envious because I will rebel against
any oppressor, and this is known as self defense
I show no mercy, they claim that I'm the lunatic
But when the shit gets thick, I'm the one you go and get
Don't look confused, the truth is so plain to see
Cause I'm the nigga that you sell-outs are ashamed to be

So he's a better singer and dancer than Eminem, and Eminem is a better rapper than him?

Not to say MJ couldn't bust out a flow now and then.

Nah, there's going to be more than one. No one can fuck with MJ from a musical/iconic/talent standpoint so they need to have that to bring up, regardless of it never having been proven beyond a reasonable doubt. Once you list all the great things Michael Jackson could do and achieved, you are prone to getting a "uh, well, he still touched little boys LOLOLOLOLOLOL" reaction because otherwise they would just have to acknowledge his greatness. So I usually chuckle when it gets to that.
