Eminem takes jabs at people who said Relapse sucked in a way too. He says shit like "you don't listen to the lyrics anyway" on Recovery. All that shit is referring to Relapse.

Infinite has no subject matter. It's rhyming to rhyme.

No, listen to It's OK and (to a degree) Searchin'.

When I heard "shorty dance while I diss you to the beat / fuck the words, you don't listen to them anyway" in Cold Wind Blows I could only think about the song "Bitch" he has with D12 and assumed it was a direct reference to it:

It don't matter, I'm just blabbering
Like you understand what I'm saying Anyway
I'm just traveling In one ear and I'm out the other
You're so fuckin drunk all you hear is the Beat da beat
I could be sayin anything Get ya ass on the floor

i agree with the thread maker :y:

when it comes to rhyming, Relapse takes the cake, eats it, then gets another. Recovery had a huge decline in rhymes. it mostly just had 1 to 2 syllables with a few exceptions. and some of those were like "giving up" "living up" using words in more than one rhyme, which kinda ruins the rhyme to me.

It depends on your definition of "LYRICAL". For me it's the whole package; Rhymes, concept, structure, etc. Here's how I would review his albums on a "LYRICAL" level.

Infinite - Most multi-syllable rhyming by far, but in general they're showcase rhymes about no given topic. Hugely impressive nonetheless.

SSLP - Not as many multi's, but they're on topic. Also the conceptual rhymes started coming like Guilty Conscience and '97 Bonnie & Clyde, which means it's lyrically superior to Infinite, imo.

MMLP - Similar to SSLP, great multi's and internal rhyming, but even greater song concepts, so more lyrical and better in my opinion than SSLP

The Eminem Show - The rhyming's still great, but the darker concepts got dropped for more personal and uplifting tracks like Hailey's Song and Sing For The Moment. Not neccessarily a bad thing. It's still lyrically brilliant, but they're are more replayable tracks on TES than probably any other Eminem album. He made it more marketable and mainstream without dumbing down the lyrics or making weak substandard songs. That's a huge accomplishment, that not many other rappers (if any) have achieved, it was Eminem on top of his game, and he hasn't reached that level since.

Encore - 2 or 3 tracks containing multi's, weakest album by far "rhyme" wise. Some interesting concepts, but most songs are trash; Puke, Ass Like That, etc. Without a doubt his worst album lyrically, but also his worst album as a whole. But I still think it's a good album, with at least 5 or 6 good songs.

Relapse - Best multi-syllable rhyming since Infinite, but lacking the creative imagination of SSLP & MMLP. I like the serial killer stuff, but for most people it's not really replayable material. Huge improvement on Encore lyrically, but the accents DID let it down. Underground was so awesome because he was using his natural voice, if he did that with Stay Wide Awake or 3 A.m they would've been amazing.

Recovery - This is a new Eminem in my opinion. Switching the lyrical side to use a lot more metaphor's than he used to. There are still multi syllable and internal rhyme schemes, but not as much as previous albums. Jury's still out on this album.

The word "lyrical" should be banned on rap forums.

SSLP is his best lyricism...crisp multis and vivid narration. Everything was so smooth...when you listened to a song, it was like, "that's the way it's MEANT to go." You don't even think about Eminem having to COME UP with the stuff...it's like it's just there. Can't ask for more than that.

Two things to note about Eminem, though:

1. He has a lot of things that even the more astute listener will miss and discover much later on in terms of rhymes. I still discover new ones to this day, and I suspect I'll die having still not discovered some of them. He has INVERSE multis in some songs for crying out loud.

2. He does little things in terms of assonance (not multis) that we just take for granted. In Sing For the Moment, we don't think about "he SAGS his PANTS, do-RAGS..."...we're too busy focusing on the genius of "rock and rap/stockin cap."

When you really analyze his lyrics, it's hilarious to think about the people who brush him off as "overrated white hype...makes pop music and disses celebritiezzz. *Insert 50 underground rappers here* are ALL better than Eminem."
