50 said Em made Recovery because he wasn't happy with the reaction to Relapse. And the fact Em apologizes for the album and please to 'make it up' to fans is obvious that's what it is. It's not just about how he felt, it's about the reaction. If it was just about how he felt about the records then he wouldn't have apologized like that. He probably felt he'd let long-time fans down or something, but either way - he recorded new material due to a mixed public reception. So we do know.

I think he genuinely regretted Relapse and not just because of the reaction but because of the fact that after a while he thought the songs weren't songs that would pass the test of time. So it's OK to apologise for something if you think you've made a mistake.

I think he made a conscious decision to go in a different direction, but I think it was as much for him as for everyone else.

Relapse has aged fantastically for me though, it's something that I appreciate more with each listen.

I think to apologize within your art and make your next art part of that isn't OK. I think that's weird, pointless and corny. Even if what you say was genuinely the case (which I don't believe it was); to cement it in time or talk about your album on the next album... it just kind of breaks the entire illusion of the art and makes it about 'Eminem the professional rapper', it feels tacky and makes actual stories or works of fiction like "Space Bound" feel... broken on an album where he's mentioning a past album. I just think that's a corny thing to do and proof he was appeasing people. He was publicly asking for forgiveness to fans he felt he'd let down, it wasn't a personal thing, it was appeasing.

Em saying "these are average raps, I got the savage batch hidden" on Psycho (which isn't average, and I love it) makes me want Relapse 2 even more. He was obviously referring to Relapse 2 back then.

Too bad we didn't get it.
