So why do people hate LTWYL? It's not pop. It has Rihanna, and she fit the concept, and it's a very violent and serious subject matter. It's the same with Lighters. Sure, the beat is kinda poppy, but the song isn't. It's about getting out of a dark place and turning your life around. The "lighters" part of the song could be taken 2 ways. Firstly, it could be literal. A sky full of lighters, like at a stadium show. Secondly, it could be a metaphor for a higher power that helped them get outta their dark place. You see in the video how they're standing on a hill overlooking the sky, right? Em said in You're Never Over he had a vision of Proof. For Royce, it could've been the thought of helping out his father that made him get back on track.
It's not pop, because it's on an Eminem project.
If it's on Pink's album, it'll be poppy. Who cares.
Yes it's on Kendrick's album. They're actually friends apparently.
And I don't hate LTWYL as much as the next guy but it definitely is a poppy song. Rihanna is there for a reason, yeah. The song could basically be about her. But the song suffered with her on it imo. Skylar Grey's version is MUCH better. And I'm not just talking about the hook but that's irrelevant. The beat is pretty poppy as well from what I recall but I don't really listen to that song. The pop elements aren't my main gripe with it anyway.
As for lighters, that song was made for the radio and for chicks to sing to. Absolutely no doubt about that. There's no reason for Bruno Mars to be on there and him and his production team probably just made it worse. It might just be exposure for Royce, I don't know. But there's no denying that it was made for a demographic.
It's still the type of music he was dissing 12 years ago though.
