Basketball really isn't very popular anywhere outside The US. I live in Australia and out biggest sport is Rugby. People like soccer and cricket too but basketball is on par with netball. To know who That Kareem guy is here would be weird, and if you talked about a guy with a name like that people would think you are a terrorist.

To summarize: It isn't common knowledge, it's UNCOMMON knowlege because you have people from all around the world telling you we don't know and honestly we dont care. he chucked a ball through some hoops from far away, that's impressive and takes a lot of skill but it doesnt make him an icon. Michael Jordan is an icon. Shaq is an icon. This dude is like a Dr Dre. People involved with hip hop are like COME ON! IT'S DRE!!!! YOU FUCKING ITUNES HIPSTER YOU ARE WEARING FUCKING BEATS BY DRE AND YOU DON'T KNOW THE GUY?! but in all honesty although he is a legend he isn't an icon. knowing his names, or his songs, isn't common knowlege

also american football is a joke

Here is the way I see it.
In your country handball is not popular, because you suck at it. In my country, we kinda forgot about basketball, because we suck at it.
Get it? But the truth is that we don't care THAAAT much about basketball as Americans do.
Football is no.1 sport in Europe. Fact. Basketball is not as nearly popular as football is.
For Americans it's common knowledge to know who Kareem is, and in Europe, common knowledge is knowing who, for example, Maradona is.
That's all I've been trying to say.

So maybe you're saying that just because your country sucks at basketball

If you say handball is 2nd sport in Europe, so what is 3rd? Chess?
Maybe handball is 2nd but basketball is at least 3rd and it is popular even if there are a couple more popular sports.

dude, i'm not saying handball is 2nd sport in Europe.
But it's not as big as it is in America.
We just don't give a damn as much as they do.
Like I said, football is sport no.1, in USA basketball is sport no.1
get it, dude? like someone before me said, knowing who kareem is, is not common knowledge. and if someone never heard of him, it's not weird.
i kinda feel like i'm talking to the wall here. :coffee:

And, no. I'm not saying this because we suck at basketball. You suck at handball and football, but you're good in basketball. That's why basketball is more popular in your country, because you're successfull in it. And we can't say that about football and handball, now can we?

Basketball is still the 3rd most popular sport in the world.

Some people might not know who Maradona or Pele is, but generally among people they are known, and football is the most popular sport by far in the world, so for some people not to know who Pele or Maradona are, well it puts things in perspective when it comes to basketball legends.

Also I never said just playing basketball made Kareem an icon, which it actually does though because he's the best at it when it comes to scoring in NBA history. Your naive description of basketball can be made about any sport, but that's just silly. Fwiw. as I stated, Kareem is known for so much more outside of basketball, Game of Death is one of the biggest parts of pop culture still, and Kareem's part in that has so much to do with it. The fact that you label Shaq an icon after tells me how little you know about basketball. When it comes to basketball circles, Shaq is not in Kareem's level.
