I will soon :) it'll be the greatest article ever written on Eminem's greatness!

God, my blog would be swarming with readers if I could be bothered lmao...

When I put effort in before I had a lot of people coming there.

I have a million article ideas in my head, I just find it so hard to actually start. I think possibly because I know it'll then take hours. Because I'm so obsessive that I'll write and write and write until my brain is empty and then perfect every word. So it's so draining.

Wish I could just DO everything I want to do, always.

I really want to read it too. As a growing emcee (Not even really THAT yet), I'd really love to learn WHY he's as successful as he is, and learn from that.

I guess that's why you're so good at getting your point across.

You don't necessarily have to write it all at once though.

Well one key aspect with Eminem, is melody.

That's one obvious aspect to his worldwide popularity and why he translates. He creates memorable melodic flows and melodic songs, simple as that.

A lot of rappers have a flow that gets lost in melody rather than creates it.

He's always got a rhythmic structure at work, it's nuanced and obsessed over where as a lot of rappers simply rhyme randomly and write without direction - Em constantly re-arranges and perfects the way every sentence sounds to make sure each second of delivery is on-point.

There's lots of reasons why he's so successful. And basically none of it has to do with him being white. As people have now witnessed with Yelawolf.

Oh I do because... if any length of time passes... I could write half of it say and perfect it and be totally happy with it. But then if I come back to it in like a week even, I may want to change most of it... so unless I do it all at once, I'd be infinitely refining things.

Which is why in TES he basically WAS the beat when he produced it, correct? From every snare, everything?

The article would most likely be worth the time spent writing it though. I haven't ever been able to find a good explanation of why he's the greatest. I can't really put my finger on just why I think he's the best, so it would be cool to read.

Yeah well the very unique thing about him... not all rappers are musicians. Many are just lyricists, and they can rap in time and everything but they don't neccesarily create or think up melodies...

Em thinks up melodies in his head, if you listen to basically any song produced by him, especially on TES, the song has a memorable melody ("Cleanin' Out My Closet"). As soon as you think of the song you think of that tune.

And I think with other producers he would be coming up with some melodic flow and structure and then trying to fit it to a different beat. On TES he could create beats that WERE the melody of the flows he had in his head, so they were in sync, hence the effect.

Interesting... what would you say about his vocabulary? Lots I know say that his vocabulary isn't necessarily large but gets his point across beautifully. Also, how would a modern rapper rap about concepts and evoke emotions like he did?

I think he must have a pretty massive vocabulary, but doesn't always show it because it isn't always necessary. But seriously, "you gon' jump in my truck and then try to get truculent?" I know I learned something there.

Edit: And he said in that Anderson Cooper interview that he tries to learn as many words as he can because he doesn't like to think that there are words out there that he can't utilize.

I think any intelligent person can have a large vocabulary when they choose, or certainly in the context of lyricism. As all you would have to do is look in a dictionary and expand...

Which is what he did of course, and you got Infinite.

Using complex and less-common words consistently as say Canibus does (as he's pretentious) almost ruins the effect or softens the edge of the sharp words.

It's like if you swear constantly, you become numb to it. But if somebody never ever swore, you knew them 20 years and they never swore once then one day you did something to them and they shouted "you FUCKING idiot" - that would carry a lot more weight.

Similarly Em is aware of overkill in the word department now I think, after Infinite. But he's still a wordsmith and he does pepper interesting words about the place. It's more like a painter's flicks - little drops here and there to touch it off...

Other than that he uses a fairly standard vocabulary but it's his phrasing that makes it sound magical. No rapper I know of places such important focus on the phrasing of sentences. I hear other good rappers and yeah they're rhyming a lot and are witty and have good flows but they're ultimately forgettable because their phrasing is generic, it's just straightforward talk.

Em utilizes phrasing like a poet would, for effect.

"look in his eyes, it's all lies - the stars and stripes have been swiped, washed out and wiped!"

That line is a great example. And highlights another reason he's so successful: he talks to the audience. Even though saying "look in his eyes" may seem arbitrary and just a feed line, it's still implied towards the listener - thus making the listener feel involved / connected to Em.

And he creates fantastic imagery too. There's so so much to dissect about so many aspects of his lyricism that put him way above any of the other greats as a lyricist.

I see! I understand why he was such a perfectionist then, because all of this is amazing and I've never considered that.

Really? wow, I find that odd. Just because... well I analyze everything like that, I can't help it. And you just sort of assume other people are doing it too...

But of course we're all analyzing it a bit differently and with different intelligence etc.

I've had a lot of comments in the past on blog posts basically saying they liked it because I broke it all down, I'm surprised by how many people don't analyze by themselves.

Guess it depends what type of person you are, I was always naturally good at English though and just felt like writing and communication came easy to me. So maybe that's why I've been sucked in to dissecting Eminem so much.

Em clearly has a brain 'made' for language too. You'll notice he often knows a lot of characters or just pops a little fable or reference in a line constantly... some of the things he knows I'm very surprised at. Especially considering he had so little education. But if your brain is high-functioning in the language areas, you'll soak up and excell with words regardless.
