MJ status? no way, 1st - MJ was in the pop genre which is has more mass appeal 2nd - MJ came out in a time people were actually buying shit. YEAH, PIRACY CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE OF 300+ MILLION SALES IN 30YRS!!!

on the other hand, let's compare Eminem to other rappers...he's already passed Pac/B.I.G, imo, so he'll be the MJ equivalent of Rap when he dies...

Elvis has sold over 1 Billion records, MJ didn't do that, tho he claimed to. No one will ever be as big as Elvis. As for groups, the beatles sold a billion worldwide also, so they are the best when it comes to groups.

Not all about record sales though. And MJ had far fewer releases than Presley too. Elvis's appeal spans mostly to white people to be honest. I really don't think he's as universal as MJ but that's my opinion.

Let's face it, before MJ died, hardly anyone talked about him (years after he ended his music career), people were happy call him a child molester even after his trials (albeit a minority), he was basically like any other top retired popstar: good to listen to back in the days, but moved onto newer music.

But then he suddenly dies, and the whole world is talking about him, his old popular tracks rise through the charts again, hypocrites ( previous MJ bashers) unfold and he gets legendary status.

That's not completly correct. Before he died, his London shows sold old quickly and there are pre-death Youtube comments praising him. And it took him dying for me to realize how talented he really was.

For the record ^^^

No

Not only is Michael Jackson one of the most successful solo artist of all time, he was also involved in a lot of high profile non music related incidents (his colour change, sexual alegations against him)
Same sword they knight you they gon' good night you with
Sh.., Thats' only half if they like you
That ain't even the half what they might do
Don't believe me, ask Michael
See Martin, see Malcolm
You see Biggie, see Pac, see success and its outcome
See Jesus, see Judas; see Caesar, see Brutus
See success is like suicide
Suicide, it's a suicide
If you succeed, prepare to be crucified

Ah, yes. I forgot to point this out. Fucking crazy how fast it sold too. Kinda weird to think he might still be alive now if that hadn't happened. They made it 50 shows because of the demand for more tickets after the initial sell-out.

Though he probably wouldn't get the same love and support as Michael had. Too many people hate him.

Some people find eminem irritating, and you can see why if its not your thing.. but MJ's 'haters' wanted to frickin' kill him..

Probably not as his music is too confrontational and divisive.

There will always be people for example that think he's homophobic because they're too stupid to understand what he's doing and they never actually listen to what he's saying anyway. They just read a few headlines and make up their mind.

Also, MJ was a pop star. Eminem makes hip-hop and always has, to the core. Other rappers who have a problem with him like to call him a pop star but in reality, that's nonsense. Pop is its own genre. You're not a pop star because you're a popular artist. Eminem is a RAP star because he makes rap music, period.

Because of that, hip-hop will never be as... Easy to swallow as pop for most. It's a harsher music made mainly from harsh times. It's got grungy overtones and is full of individual opinions, where as pop is literally watered down for the masses. It's purposely drained of these qualities for the sake of being as accepted by as many people as possible.

So no, Em will never be an MJ for those reasons.

But that's the way it should be. Given what he does and how he does it, it's only right it should be that way. Like Gervais said - If you're doing anything right as an artist, you should assume as many people hate what you're doing as love it. Being safe, is not artistic. MJ is called an artist because he was very unique of course. He was an immortal dancer and was also involved with a lot of his visuals so in that sense he was an artist and it's what helped craft his iconic status.

But in terms of true artistry, with music; Eminem is the more reputable candidate for a legendary artist. MJ turned entertainment into an art. Eminem turns his thoughts into an art, he's been playing puppet master with the minds of millions for so long, to such a brilliant degree. He's much more impressive in that sense. What MJ did required a lot of practice but what Em does requires not only a lot of practice but consistent, individualistic, intellectual innovation. It's as good as your brain can make it. But what he does doesn't agree with everybody, it's not sugorcoated.
