Good production with average to sub par to sometimes down right terrible lyrics. The worst rapper who gets praise on a consistent basis from people.
Nas has been consistent since Stillmatic. Stillmatic, Gods Son, Streets Disciple, Hip Hop is Dead, Untitled, Life Is Good, all were at the least good or solid albums.
Kanye makes music though. He bring his creativity full circle through lyrics, delivery and production, without letting one completely overshadow the other.
Sure he can be judged on posse-cuts like Mercy et al, but listen to his albums all the way through and it's clear to see why he is praised. Take Hold My Liquor for example. What appears average lyricism at face value is made shockingly poignant by the song's composition and the additional vocals of CK and Justin Vernon. His music breaches genres. It isn't limited by the tenets that uphold rap.
