The "real" people are MY people whose opinions I trust. I'm not a big forum guy because for all I know you're 13 and been an Em fan for 3 months (or me for that matter) and forums tend to come to a consensus on things like this where there are only a few detractors. That being said, you simply can't compare the two albums at this point, because you said in your own post we haven't discovered the album fully so even Complex including it is bullshit. When it comes down to it, and I'm not sure anyone would argue this, but SSLP and MMLP had CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE. Parents were scared of this man, his music got to people. And THAT's why my mind is closed to MMLP2 being a better album. That's why the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, etc withstood time, because they impacted a generation. I don't think "Asshole" or Love Game" are doing much in that dept. Sure, let's debate and compare them, I like debating. But those two albums will probably never be reached again in rap. TES was a GREAT album, but the storm had died down, he wasn't controversial anymore. Mind you, controversy doesn't equal greatness, but Eminem got in peoples' heads and gave them tracks to make them think. Not one of the songs on those two albums were fast just for the fuck of it, every second was a great story, or a social commentary, or something SIGNIFICANT. MMLP2 doesn't have that, or at least I haven't seen it yet.
And 'm listening to the album a lot. http://www.last.fm/user/travisw711
Yeah we're on the same page about that whole first part. I take no offense to the fact that you don't know who I am or if I know what I'm talking about the same way I don't think too hard about what a lot of people on here say, or the possibility that you're 13 and made up the fact that you talked to people about it or any situation of the sort haha. I agree. Forums are a pretty shitty place to get a reliable gauge of opinions, unless over time you have very good reason to believe a particular set of individuls have proven they know what they are talking about, at least a little bit. That's why it pisses me off that some rappers go on forums to measure "fan" reactions. Forums can be fun, but should't really be relied on for artistic feedback. People on the internet are so unpredictable and usually unreliable for established opinions. I also agree that nobody can make any definitive comparisons so soon, Complex just took an opportunity to make an article in the midst of the hype, which isn't that out of the ordinary regardless of whether its an accurate list or not.
With that said, I assumed we were just talking about album/song quality. Just pure, side by side look at production, delivery, lyrics..etc. Which is still too early, but also still a very discussable topic when the time comes. I personally wouldn't factor in "cultural influence" when comparing album quality, because as you said, it isn't even possible at this point to ever get close to that impact. So even if he did put out an album every bit as good as the original MMLP, the new album would lose by default, for a reason that has nothing to do with how well he made songs. But, if that is your criteria then yes, I agree it probably isn't worth discussing which one is better.
Well musically speaking, I'm not a fan of the "puns". He got rid of it mostly, but still they highly bother me, so that alone brings the album down for me so far. But really, though, I'm not big on comparing albums like this because 15 years is a different audience, different world really. Every album is a moment in time that can't be replicated. The only reason I brought it up is it's silly to compare a brand new album and an undisputed classic. Even if one is better, it doesn't matter to me because I go more by how much I like each individual album and how often I listen to it. The albums we should really only compare would be the 2 newest and analyze more if he improved at all
