Here's the thing. And I'm sorry, but I'm in an argumentative mood. I know this has been said before, and not to sound trite, but the guy grew up. He was either going to, or he was going to die of some sort of overdose or reckless behavior, before he got the chance to. That's just what happens when people sort their lives out. Why shouldn't he work with "pop" artists if he happens to respect them? Jay-Z records with Rihanna... matter-of-fact, Jay-Z discovered[/i] Rihanna. Is HE "faggoting out?" Royce ALSO recorded with Bruno Mars, but people aren't on his[/i] ass about it. PS, he always respected Pink, and he always respected even Christina Aguilera. I don't think he ever had a wholesale problem with "pop" just with the whole idea of talentless people being famous. And I think that more or less still stands, for him. Whether you think Rihanna is pointless or whatever isn't the point. Maybe he knows her better than you do. Not only that, but he has said, even back then, that a lot of him "dissing" pop stars and whatnot, was to distance himself and separate himself from that. I imagine he's more comfortable with his status at this point.

It basically just comes down to Em no longer fitting the mold that people have cut out for him. But the guy's happy and at peace with his life, and why shouldn't he be? Yes, that probably means his music is going to lack... something, but who cares? His old, classic stuff hasn't disappeared, so "old Eminem" is definitely very much still alive, through his music. Biggie and Tupac are considered to be so amazing, largely because they didn't stay alive long enough to get old or have a chance to drop something shitty. Same with Kurt Cobain, for example. I mean, Tupac died at age 25. Kurt Cobain died at 27, just a few years into his career. Imagine if Em had died shortly after 8 Mile or something. He would have gone down in history as a total infallible legend. But should we really take it as a bad thing that he has lived long enough and been in the public eye long enough to have been revealed as a mere mortal? That's like saying that Grace Kelly should have died or dropped out of sight right after she got too old to be stunning anymore. Her beauty still exists, even now. It is the young, beautiful woman that people remember, and is the fact that she aged and died well beyond her prime really something lamentable?

To me, Eminem is past his prime (though I am crossing my fingers for him to blow everything out of the water on his next album... but who knows). But I don't lose sleep over it. He's not a one hit wonder by any means, and the idea that his excellent work is going to ever be completely overshadowed by his less inspired recent stuff is kind of ludicrous. Imagine a world in which Kurt Cobain is still alive, and he's playing some Prog Rock, BS Killers style music that people bitch about. And Nirvana has a Broadway musical. Are people really going to forget Nevermind? And what about, say, Greenday? I would say they sold out, but who cares?? Their old stuff is still legit, regardless.

So that's kind of where I'm at with Eminem. He had to peak at some point, and everything that goes up must come down. His priorities are different today. He's different today than he was. I don't see it as a tragedy or a loss. He's given this world and culture so much, you'd think he might deserve to fuck around and enjoy the spoils of his victory. I don't get this crap about he's too lazy and fuck him he's so lazy, and Tech puts out an album every six months or whateverthefuck. He's not an elected official. Our tax money doesn't go to him, so it makes no difference how productive he is or isn't. We can only pay him for what he DOES do. It's his prerogative to be as stingy with his music as he wants. Or to choose to not be that hard of a worker, now that he's set for life. I don't know, I don't get why people get mad for him being "lazy." He's an artist, he shouldn't be expected to meet quotas. Random tangent.

Snoop has aged like a fine wine - he does his own shit now (most of it I don't really like) but at the end of the days he still has what he used to have... Him and Dre at cochlea were insane - took me back to the doggie dogg days - Eminem has lost that ability. Whether it was the drugs, age, whatever - he is disconnected now and it isn't coming back. Lets just hope he finds something fresh that's just as dope...

I hope you're not saying that Snoop right now is better than Eminem...because he's not. Snoop has fallen off with his music too, perhaps even worse. Dude has collaborated with pop stars like Justin Beiber just to stay relevant. Eminem doesn't have to collaborate with anyone to stay relevant, all he has to do is drop a single and the world is buzzing about him again. Snoop doesn't have that.

Well, my guess is that he's "disconnected" from his past music (with the exception of TES songs) because they were from a time when he was doing drugs and everything...guess they remind him of how things were back then and you'd like to think new Eminem would rather move forward than backwards. Why perform decade old music when he's got newer music to perform?

I hear you. But its just too massive a contrast. If you someone were to tell you in 2002 that Eminem would go on to produce Recovery, you would probably laugh.

I know I'm going off on a bit of a tangent but I love what he tried to do with Relapse - go back to the roots so to speak. IMO he came up with an incredible concept album. Unfortunately, the listeners didn't concur and he got a fair bit of hate at the time. It may have also lead his hand somewhat in going the more popular way.

I went to the concert in Melbourne and was a shatterred to hear the amount of poofy pop songs he played (lighters is the perfect example). Again, the contrast for me is too massive. He recorded Bad Meets Evil on one hand and on the other hand he is making the radio happy with the likes of Lighters. Just doesn't sit well IMO.

I agree that he is probably mentally shying away from that to some extent and trying to move forward but he became big because he was different - now he is just an extremely talented "same as the other guy".
