Something About Em' I Find Odd

Postby GibbzyTrShady » Jan 5th, '11, 05:09

i got my hands on the home and home mixtape and was listening and i have noticed eminem performs older tracks of his at his concerts with alot of energy and they still sound great, i just wonder do you think he ever draws energy from older songs of his to write or make his newer material, because allthough i am a fan of both relapse n recovery for what they are his older material will always be far superior in my opinion alone (bar encore), i just wonder if em still likes preforming his older songs at his gigs etc then why does he never think of drawing from them to create newer material, i personally belive the route he went with recovery was a good one but i think hes still got a "lose yourself, way i am,even without me or the real slimshady in him somewhere i dont know, all i know is he likes to constantly switch his styles up etc, but you can switch your style up without losing the style you have
i guess i just really hope for an eminem record that will make me feel like im 10 again aha
neways thread is pretty pointless just wanted to see what yall thought

yo no need for the retard comment really, i mean tbh i could just post up another fake leak thread or talk about why recovery is to mainstream or ask why em's yelling so much but that would be just the same as every other thread in here just because my thread might not be incredibly exciting it still makes more sense than some of the threads around here so use the sarcy "retard" comments on someone who it might actually bother next time :)

I was thinking about this yesterday. I was wondering...if he can still spit those songs the same, why can't he make new songs like that?

I think he's being too complicated with his rhyming now.

Look at Square Dance + Kill You, since I mentioned them already. He disguises his rhymes as if he's just talking to you, because he's telling stories. He's not using stupid punchlines that make you think (even though some of them are awesome).

He needs to run through his old material again imo. Just..simplify his work, you know?

Yes!!! :D That is sactly what i mean it would be good to get the simpler sound back, i mean if you take a look at a song like Kill you Lyrically its fire but so simple the beat and everything but wit and everything is spot on, it would be cool for him to be able to perhaps use some of his older material to inspire newer stuff :coffee:

Geno wrote:Yup. He makes his old work sound so very simple. Kill You, The Real Slim Shady, Rock Bottom, etc. all have really simplistic sounding beats. Not a lot going on. Then he constructs a story and spills his mind all over the record that everything just flows so fluently and sounds 100% natural, even though it's lyrically complicated with multies, etc.

I dunno why he can't do that anymore.

Agreed. I think the main difference is that when he started out (with SSLP and MMLP) anyway, it was effortless. He could weave complicated rhymes into a story that made sense, was witty, was controversial and at the same time he could sound relaxed, angry, sad, like he was fooling around...anything.

Nowadays his rhyme schemes are mental but it sounds more forced. He seems to be trying really hard - with some great results. It would be interesting if he simplified things a bit. His verse in Echo was a good example of how he can still do it. The start of that verse reminded me of TES.

He's already said that he does this - Draws inspiration from older material. He actually said he did it with Relapse, but then when explaining Recovery said it again as if he hadn't done it before lmao.

I even remember, with Relapse he said he went back to listen to stuff from The Slim Shady EP and the LP and The Marshall Mathers LP. Then Relapse received mixed reactions and he said the same thing again with Recovery. But, maybe he went back and listened harder as he said he tried to figure out why the songs off Relapse didn't make him feel like those songs...

Which I think is all code for "fans didn't like X, let's try Y".

Either way, nostalgia can also romanticize and amplify the quality of things in your mind. If you attach certain memories or periods of your life to material, which can't be matched by the current period, with the current material, the memory can always feel superior anyway.

Not to say his older stuff isn't far superior, but at the same time... the 'newness' of things can make you see it far more for what it is. And it hasn't had time to set in or become a part of your past yet. But, give it five years and I'm sure "Cinderella Man" and "Almost Famous" will sound even more glorious to you. It's already happening to people with Relapse.

In my opinion he can do it but he doesn't want. He always tried to be different year after year and for now the only way he knows to be new is to rap faster then before. J

Good point. Songs like kill you, sing for the moment seem to have some sort of 'epic-ness' attached to them which only time can provide.

Over time the Recovery era, may become just as memorable as the MMLP era or TES era. maybe.

I agree :y:
I was listening to Relapse a week or so ago and it sounds so much better than I remember it, mainly because it's so much different from the stuff he'd doing now. The accents are like a breath of fresh honestly, just because all the collabs lately, or most of them, have had the shouty punchline delivery. Once he moves onto another project, going back to Recovery will probably make me appreciate it much more because of how different it is also. Not to say I don't love it already, I do, but the recent collabs have tainted my view of it a little because of the shouting all the time in them.

Not saying it will but I agree it could. IMO in 2 years Recovery will be considered a classic. IDK if it'll be up there with MMLP or TES but IMO it will certainly become regarded as a classic and my loved around here than Relapse. And IMO it will be considered either his 3rd or possibly 4th best album behind SSLP
