I feel that even though Recovery has been getting a lot of hate lately -- that it was absolutely necessary. Yeah, less multi's, corny punchlines here and there, but I really don't think he was focused on the lyrical side of things as much as just clearing shit up. I think that in Relapse he more than established the fact that he's still perfectly capable of being extremely lyrical.
Songs like 25 to Life, Talking to Myself, Going Through Changes and of course You're Never Over were pertinent. He needed to clear up those topics that he avoided and/or wasn't ready to talk about on Relapse.
I feel that if Recovery never happened, there would be a lot more drama here than just hating the beats/lyrics. Because like I said -- I don't feel that he was aiming so much for the technical side of lyricism as much as the deeper, more emotional side of things -- and overcoming those demons he's been having to deal with.
Just my two cents

On a side note: Everybody bitched and moaned about his work on Relapse, so he changed it up, and they still bitched. There's no winning
