MGM and Sony Near Deal to Acquire SOUTHPAW

Postby The Aviator » Oct 20th, '11, 02:56

It’s time for a status check on Southpaw. Last we heard, DreamWorks let the project go, and the filmmakers were shopping it elsewhere. I have been rooting for Southpaw to find a home because of the intriguing collection of talent: Eminem starring, Antoine Fuqua (Brooklyn’s Finest) directing, a script by Kurt Sutter (Sons of Anarchy). Southpaw won’t need to wander too much longer, because that project also enticed a number of studio suitors. MGM is reportedly the frontrunner to acquire the film with a bid that places Sony in charge of distribution.

Sutter’s script follows a welterweight boxing champion (Eminem) whose life is upended when tragedy strikes. Hit the jump for more on the story, including Sutter’s explanation of how it parallels Eminem’s career.

Sutter told Deadline:

[“In a way, this is a continuation of the 8 Mile story, but rather than a literal biography, we are doing a metaphorical narrative of the second chapter of his life. He’ll play a world champion boxer who really hits a hard bottom, and has to fight to win back his life for his young daughter. At its core, this is a retelling of his struggles over the last five years of his life, using the boxing analogy. I love that the title refers to [Eminem] being a lefty, which is to boxing what a white rapper is to hip hop; dangerous, unwanted and completely unorthodox. It’s a much harder road for a southpaw than a right-handed boxer.”]

I find Eminem to be one of our most fascinating entertainers, and a captivating screen presence in his one feature film role. I was already on board when I thought it was your basic inspirational sports story; the real-life element adds a nice layer to the drama.

Do you think Eminem will ever act in a movie that is not based on his life? Kinda solipsistic, but I don’t know that I need to see the rapperbranch out. (Random Acts of Violence could be that project if it comes together.)

I think the movie will come out in 2013 :y:

I thought a report came out awhile back that they decided to not use Eminem for the part?

Yeah, I thought this was already not happening. Besides, I think he could do something more interesting. But this movie would be better than no movie ever again, for sure.

I wanted an album so rugged nobody could touch it.
Spent a million a track and went over my budget.
Now how in the fuck am I supposed to get out of debt?
I can't rap anymore, I just murdered the alphabet.

Sounds pretty good. I think a movie along the lines of I Am Legend or Hancock would suit him best. He has already shown that he likes both of them movies. (Complex picture shoot and Not Afraid music video)

Well he could put out a soundtrack album for the movie just like 8 Mile.
Fuck top five, bitch, I'm top four
And that includes Biggie and Pac, whore
And I got an Evil Twin
So who the fuck do you think that third and that fourth spot's for?

Yes, it could be. But 8 mile was so good,I don't think this can be so good. Maybe because boxing movies are not my thing. So I prefer a new album and maybe a bit of tour.
matter of time to know if the movie goes ahead or not.

It was - but now production companies, namely Sony-MGM, Alcon Entertainment & Summit Entertainment are interested in picking up the movie as they see potential. Sony-MGM is the frontrunner to bag the deal. And if indeed it is resurrected, the movie will definitely see the light of day.

The film will be produced by Eminem’s Shady Films’ managers and producing partners Paul Rosenberg and Stuart Parr, and Alan and Peter Riche of Riche Productions.

I'm very excited at the news & even more excited for Random Acts of Violence.

Apparently I assumed that Eminem presence on this was scrapped and not the Script. This is definitely a good move.Depends on when this is released ,it would be a addon to Fans because we would be getting another Soundtrack.

Hope he does not keep his Solo Album Project sideways.
