Complex.com's 25 Corniest Rap Beefs:

Image

#1: Benzino vs. Eminem

"Back in 2002, Eminem was the biggest-selling, most popular, and lyrically gifted rapper in the world. Benzino was a part-time rapper, part-time magazine boss who didn’t take too well to the barbs Eminem threw (calling him 'Hasbenzino' etc.) following a less-than-perfect 4/5 mic rating for Em's album The Eminem Show in The Source magazine.

Benzino took it to the next logical step: accusing Eminem of succeeding solely thanks to the color of his skin. He staked his entire checkered career on bringing the real-life Eminem show down—along with everyone Shady-affiliated—obsessing through diss songs, radio interviews, and long-form attack pieces in The Source. On the other side, Em effortlessly finished Benzino on two freestyles, and lnterscope pulled all of its advertising from The Source, eventually ending Benzino's reign at the magazine."

Also: #11 - Eminem vs. Triumph The Insult Comic Dog

"In 2002, Eminem walked around like the neighborhood bully in a playground, picking on bystanders whose only mistake was being popular. Moby. Britney Spears. Chris Kirkpatrick—one by one. Eminem chewed them up and spit them out while the public ate it up. He got away totally unscathed until the 2002 VMAs. when he came face to face with a big. bad dog.

More precisely, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog—a dirty-mouthed puppet on the end ofT\/ writer Robert Smigel's arm. AfterTriumph finished ragging on Moby. he barely got off one insult to Eminem before Slim Shady— along with half of D12—aggressively batted the puppet away on live TV. Bad doggy!"

LOL I know, if he had beaten the guy behind the dog nobody would care. But he attacked an innocent puppet! more in a sense of calling Eminem an idiot...

Sarcasm, irony, tongue in cheek don't fit in with today's idiotized society.

Wasn't the Benzino beef due to a 2/5 for the MMLP?

I never got why the media and the world made that Triumph incident out to be something much bigger than what it was... I mean, Em didn't want to have nothing to do with the puppet, and now this was right after the puppet spoke with Moby, so he probably wanted to avoid a potential awkward situation & pushed the puppet away..

But I think what Em did after that - flipping the bird at Moby's face and then later threatening and insulting him during his acceptance speech (which resulted in the crowd booing him) was what actually accentuated his clash with the puppet.

Eminem says in his autobiography that he was under a lot of stress at the time & wasn't really keeping tabs about stuff on TV and didn't exactly know what/who Triumph was and thus overreacted... He also talks about this in the 2010 MTV VMA Behind the Scenes video that that is one of his most memorable VMA moments and that he flipped out 'cause he wasn't really in on the whole thing...

Btw Triumph's first line before Eminem got up was "First of all, everyone knows you're 35!" & the guy holding the puppet later revealed that his next line would have been "My mom's a bitch, too, but you don't hear me rapping about it! Thank you, Goodnight!" <-- so it would have been an awkward moment for Em, probably even more than what the night turned out to be for him imo...

Where did he say that bro?

I think the Mariah vs Eminem beef should have been there, instead of the Benzino one.

They say after a 'less than perfect' rating of 4/5 for The Eminem Show... as if 4/5 is a bad rating lmao. It's hardly bias is it, it's literally 1 point away from PERFECT.

Not to mention The Sauce and Nail in the Coffin aren't exactly what you call ordinary freestyles. They're pretty in-depth songs with good rhyming, actually. Besides the fact I thought it was because The Source rated it 2/5 on the MMLP?

Yeah and 3.5 for Devils Night, hence the line in The Sauce "Three and a half now just means you a piece of shit, 4 and a half or 5 means you biggie, jigga, nas or BENZINO"

You have to remember, Eminem was in the beginning of his Ambien phase during both of these incidents. Ambien's side effects include thinking you're a mothafuckin gangsta and this place ain't just safe, and all these pussies just wanna push you.

Yeah, the whole Benzino and Em beef wasn't the corniest because it exposed how much a great magazine at one point for ALL Hip-hop had fallen. But at the same, it was corny because Benzino couldn't even write a rhyme to save his life, so it was one sided. It was no where near the Nas and Jay-Z beef which spawn Ether and Takeover. So, I can understand why its number #1.
