Old Eminem x Rakim ‘Mass Appeal’ Magazine Interview

Postby 2PointOBoy » Jan 22nd, '12, 13:29

Just found this interview from Mass Appeal magazine's June 2002 issue which Eminem and Rakim covered. I'm assuming people haven't come across this before..

Parts that stood out for me personally:

Em speaks about taping radio shows at night, which he recently mentioned in the Tanning of America book interview, disliking his older material and this:

Eminem: I work hard at putting rhymes together. Sometimes they come easy and sometimes they come hard. But whatever the case, I spend time and I build my rhyme until its dope. If it's wack, I scribble it out. You can tell when an MC spends a lot of time on his shit and is really trying to craft his form. You can tell when somebody's in the studio writing two-minute rhymes and doesn't really give a fuck.

I personally feel the new Eminem isn't taking his time to craft verses (most of the time), like he used to during his glory days... He wrote his I Need a Doctor verses in about 2hrs and going by how Royce & Em have described the writing process for Hell: The Sequel, most of the writing on the record was 'on-the-spot' and I feel that both the song and the EP could have used greater dedication in the songwriting department.

Eminem's writing on Roman's Revenge/Throw It Up also comes off as lackluster... I just hope he spends more time perfecting his lyrics and flow on his next album.
They say the good die young... Proof, YOU'RE NEVER OVER.

A lot of the links/pics I've posted in the last year or so, if they're dead, there is a probability that I have archived it on Archive.today.

That was awesome, thanks for posting. It's great to see the two GOATS next to each other. And I can't fathom Em disliking his work on TSSLP, his flow on it was nuts and very unique. And if he disliked that, how can he like his new ish is beyond me.

There are people that think his flows nowadays is more diverse and he works alot more with the rhythm. I presonally find his new flows to be very uninteresting and boring. They turn me off even if the lyrics are good (which they're not). I can't even hear the rhymes because of it.

If that's what rhyming off beat is, then I want everyone to flow like that.

That may be be an addition, but as you can see in the photo above he specifically says: "When I listen to my shit from two years ago, I can't stand to listen it because I was behind the beat all the time." That of course is utter bullshit.

He's said he was behind the beat on SSLP and MMLP multiple times. I remember at least one other interview where he mentioned it, and it also comes up in Anthony Bozza's book.

Well, it's clearly more diverse & complex than on his first three albums. Relapse being the pinnacle.

He probably first properly heard them from Rakim, but was definitely more influenced by Big L. His SSLP multies are very L-esque. I can imagine Kool G Rap had an influence as well.
