There really is no old vs new Eminem

Postby Aftermathers » Jan 26th, '12, 23:25

It's basically Slim Shady Alter Ego vs Eminem/Marshall Mathers people think it's a new vs old thing cos The Slim Shady LP and The Marshall Mathers LP were predominantly Slim Shady Alias Albums predominantly where as The Eminem Show, 8 Mile Soundtrack, Recovery are Eminem Albums it's basically Slim Shady Alyer Ego/Shock Value Rap vs Deep/Introspective/Emotional Eminem/Marshall Mathers. It all comes down personal taste The Eminem Show is no different to Recovery even though they came out 8 years apart both are Deep Eminem while there is no difference between Slim Shady LP and Relapse both are Slim Shady and based on Shock Value.

For me i am a fan of Eminem/Marshall Mathers but not too keen on The Slim Shady Alter Ego.

I think that's a very narrow way to view it. Certain tracks incorporate all three together. One would have to examine every song off every album to determine the ratio to be absolutely certain that this is the case. From the general impression you get when listening to the albums, I agree with you, however I don't get the same feeling at all from Relapse that I do from SSLP. Yet they are both Slim Shady albums?

I think your suggestion is interesting, but I don't really think it works. How Em behaves in interviews, IMHO, largely reflects the Old vs New. Apart from his early 2009 German interviews, Em is a lot more serious nowadays and when he's funny it feels a lot more forced that it used to. I think this is quite metaphorical of the impression I get from his most recent albums: largely forced and influenced by his newfound status as a good role model! Many may disagree.

No, there isn't. Next topic.

Of course there is Slim Shady is the Alias that Rap's crazy shocking things the most ridiculous things like rape, serial killing, incest, dissing pop stars, murdering his wife etc.

While Eminem is Deep/Introspective very Melody driven that Rap's about life struggles, pain, hardship's, life experiences and is very Emotionally driven basically covering issues people go through daily.

Slim Shady LP, The Marshall Mathers LP, Relapse, Bad Meets Evil EP = Slim Shady Alter Ego Albums with the exception of some Songs like Rock Bottom, If I Had, The Way I Am, Stan, Beautiful, Deja Vu etc.

The Eminem Show, 8 Mile Soundtrack, Recovery = Eminem/Marshall Mathers Albums with the exception of the odd Songs like Without Me, My Dads Gone Crazy.

Encore = Mix of both Slim Shady Shock Alter Ego Song's like Just Lose It and Eminem/Marshall Mathers Song's like Mockingbird.

Eminem said it himself in his autobigraphy book himself as well.

They don't compare "old vs. new"

They compare him being sober to the drug phase.

I'd say yes and no. Because it's still Em, and you can tell by his humor and how relaxed he is outside of interviews and whatnot, but he's just simply not as hungry. Just my guess.

I'll say for the most part I agree with your idea...there IS old vs. new Em though, there is a clear difference in his music from now to back then. But as far as styles, yes I would definitely agree. Relapse and Hell: The Sequel (VERY loosely though) are "Slim Shady" projects while Recovery would be considered an "Eminem" album. Recovery is actually comparable to TES...Idk what it is but I see some similarities. Luckily Recovery has gotten better over time for me so that might be why I'm not finding it similar to TES lol.

Right now, Em has been on his Shady shit. Hasn't really rapped about anything serious in a while aside from Take From Me and Lighters. The Shady 2.0 Cypher is Slim Shady, definitely...he raps slow and clear like he used to do and says some shit he would have said back in 2000.
