Are we as fans biased towards Eminem's early days?

Postby UofLCard » Sep 4th, '12, 03:12

If he had released a song like My Name Is or Cum On Everybody (two somewhat random examples) today, would we have called it trash? I have often thought about this.

Some fans here are DEFINITELY biased. But his prime was good and deserves a lot of praise it garners, maybe not to the extent some take it here however.

it depends on if you like shady more or if you like his emotianal stuff more. i think people would react like they did when the g-shock event vids got posted on this forum. we would have said something like "the old shady is back" bla bla

I know it's beside the point, but I never cared for "Cum on Everybody" in the first place. One my personal least favorites.

Of course, everyone would call that sell-out material and complete crap.

Through each album he sort of kept maturing so it'd be weird to hear him goofing around again. I'm pretty sure that's one of the small reasons why people seem to hate his newer "fun" songs.

Highly doubt people would hate on Cum On Everybody or My Name Is if they were released today. People don't like his "fool around" songs now because they aren't written as well as they were in his prime. Both of those songs (and most of his songs in his prime) were filled with hilarious and witty quotables.. He doesn't really have that any more and it's just random lines about food and how he hates woman lol.

I'm not a big fan of it either, but I sort or give it a pass since it's on SSLP.

No, we aren't. Cum on everybody was fresh, witty and original for it's time. I agree that if the song was released in this date, it would probably be discredited as goofy or corny since we're past that era of Hip hop. Time is also relevant. If Illmatic came out 5 years later than it actually did, it wouldn't get half the praise it does now.
We maybe biased AGAINST the "new" Eminem but we certainly aren't biased towards the "old" Shady.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it's not so much the "early Eminem" bias that would make people call it trash, it'd be the whole "why would a 40-year-old man with teenage kids record this?" bias. Plus, if he COULD record My Name Is or Cum On Everybody exactly as it actually IS, then maybe it wouldn't be considered trash, but that's almost like a logical impossibility, since those songs are VERY turn of the century (of this century, I mean), sound-wise and content-wise, so it wouldn't make sense for them to have come out recently (does that make sense?) And BECAUSE they are so 1999, if they HAD come out today, they would be considered dated and out-of-touch, so that also could be why they might not be well-received.

But overall, I think it would be the age factor, and the fact that "old Em" got away with a lot more, because you could legitimately consider him a youthful deviant, but now, if he pulls that shit, he's going to be labeled as a dork making dad jokes and trying too hard to be funny. It's the same reason that Hopsin (for example) gets praise for shit that, say, Jay-Z, would be ridiculed for.

Oh and I think Cum On Everybody is a nice little jaunt, but I don't think it's a great song, per se. I do think it seemed natural and believable, though, at the time. If he came out with that now, I'd think he was trying way too hard, lol.
