At this point in their careers 50 Cent and Eminem have probably lost count of the amount of music videos they've filmed, but their latest visual, which premiered on MTV and accompanies Fif's new single "My Life," is really intended to get a message across.
The song, off 50's Street King Immortal details their individual struggles with fame over the years, and when they shot the clip in Detroit last month, they incorporated imagery that would enhance the song's message. With the budget wide open, they told MTV News that the set came together well.
"This video is unlike a lot of the videos I've shot because this one has a budget," 50 Cent said, laughing then adding, "[With] a lot of videos now you have to make the video using the bare means or whatever's around to make it cool, but [with] this one, we could actually be creative. [We] conceptually put together what the actual song itself is about and have the visuals match it."
"The site that we actually used, the architecture involved with the actual video itself, it feels like it's almost a set," he continued, "Like it was something that someone drew in a way."
Eminem, who was comfortable shooting the video in his hometown, agreed that they found the perfect backdrop to complement the song. "We got some crazy looking buildings and stuff here too, so it just feels like it fits the treatment for the video. It feels like what we're talking about. Some of the landscape here is perfect to get that point across."
It might take a few views for fans to fully digest what they're watching, but overanalyzing isn't the way to go either. "The video is kind of abstract; it's kind of metaphoric in a sense, like the paranoia of feeling like we're being chased," Eminem notes. "Whether it's true or not, it's kind of how we feel. It's kind of a metaphor for us running for our lives. Personal lives and from fame, everything that goes with the game."
