Why SSLP is NOT a great album

Postby Tonite » Dec 2nd, '12, 16:59

Hello everyone,

Okay,I should most certainly approach this topic by saying that I'm a massive Eminem fan and most of you Stans out there consider Em's debut album SSLP as being a ''classic''. Now in my opinion the album IS a classic, more or less it had an amazing lyrical content attached to it,which is by far one of the most important features for rap music. However, whichever way you look at it,having an amazing ability to create a good lyrical content is not enough. Sometimes I get a feeling that back in the day,Em didn't put heart into his music, lack of emotions is really what bugs me the most in SSLP. You get an idea that Em is almost half-dead in some of the records. The only song which I really seem to enjoy and can relate to is Rock Bottom. I give it 10/10 and I'm not afraid to state that this particular song is one of his best. But the rest of the album is just meh. I mean My Name Is is almost unlistenable,as well as songs such as Cum On Everybody. The hook for both of them is just pathetic :facepalm don't get me wrong,Em's ability to create complex rhyme schemes is undeniable,I just don't seem to enjoy it as much as his later work. Perhaps I'm just a type of person that can only relate to emotional type of music,or maybe later some day I will start to appreciate the album a little bit more. It's only my opinion, you may discuss if you wish.

I don't understand why everybody has a problem with Cum On Everybody, I love that song.

I sorta see what you're getting at with the lack of emotions, this was his debut after all and for the most part Em was just goofing around. But yeah, Rock Bottom >>>>>>>>>>

I guess it the type of record that you have to be in a certain mood to listen to. And if your the type of Eminem fan that only likes one type of sound of his (eg: emotional) I guess SSLP is not the one for you.
But for me, SSLP was the first Em album I listened to from start to finish and I was fixed. Its my favourite record of his-which is weird to say as it was his studio debut.
I see where you're coming from though

But Cum On Everybody>>

Why Tonite is a lame Username

Hello everyone,

Okay, I should most certainly approach your username by saying I am a fan of people spelling words correctly and most of you Spell Correctly out there consider my debut asshole post as being pedantic. Now in my opinion, Tonite is a colossal, sweat-cunt that is an actual medical issue because his existence makes his own taint run away and crawl up his rectum. However, whichever way you look at it, TRShady doesn't fucking deserve good posts in this slow Eminem music news era of post Rihanna, 50 Cent, and Skylar Grey features that have all recently come out. Sometimes I get the feeling Tonite crawled out of the dead corpse of Michael Jackson as he feasted on the rotting intestine of the late, great singer. The only Pop musician that deserves Tonite presence is Lady GaGa's crushed, fourteen year-old hymen. The rest of her body is meh. I mean His Name Is Tonite and he is unintelligent, as well as has the Cum from a thousand Persian soldiers. The hooks from their spears are in all two of Tonite's holes as well as in Tonite's bleeding, chaffing nipples. Don't get him wrong, this makes him cum buckets, and the complex BDSM tools that are shoved in and out of his asshole which is undeniable, he just doesn't seem to enjoy the ass play quite as much as he did when the Samaritans did it. Perhaps he can only have sex on an emotional level, eyes locking, strap-on equipped and nipples pierced or maybe later some day he will start to appreciate rim jobs when all homosexual men do it on him. It's his opinion, you may discuss if you wish.

That's not it at all. An artist doesn't goof around because he's releasing his first solo album.. If anything, he puts all his energy and talent in his first album to make a good first impression. Which he definitely did.

SDGAF, Role Model, and JDGAF are raw and his delivery doesn't "lack emotions"

You misunderstood me. Em definitely was working his hardest while working on the album, but like the title of the album implies, Em's content is mostly him twisting stories around and having a fun time.

I think it's one of his best albums. Definitely better than Encore, Relapse and Recovery. IMO
"So one last time, I'm back, 'fore it fades into black and it's all over, behold the final chapter in the saga, trying to recapture that lightning trapped in a bottle twice, the magic that started it all...tragic portrait of an artist tortured....trapped in his own drawings..." - Bruce.

you really don't have to RELATE to music to enjoy it. you can laugh with it, enjoy the stories and the sound of instruments...

"lack of emotions is really what bugs me the most in SSLP. You get an idea that Em is almost half-dead in some of the records."

This album had a lot of passion, heart, and out of this world creativity. it's how you define emotions is where your wrong, this album dealt with different emotions in a funny sarcastic ways, it takes a long time to come in terms with your life and your emotions, to make songs that describe it this way.

Maybe these songs isn't your style, but I find it hard that you dismiss it's creative content, it was not just brilliant lyrics.

For me, it's one of the best works of art ever created, and one of the best albums ever, regardless of music genre, this album is a masterpiece that looks like it 20 years to make.

This notion of him being 'detached' or 'emotionless' was intentional. He was indulging in a persona, a character - he was mixing real experiences, opinions and parts of himself with a concept, a mindset, attitude. Which is why it IS similar to Relapse.

He sounds laid back because he's supposed to be slap-happy, carefree - psychopaths aren't shocked by their own behavior, it's the norm for them, and Em is a clowning sociopath on that album, laughing at the world, and himself, like it's all one big joke.

Going straight for introspection is so predictable. These were his creative years, where documenting his life and rehashing life stories weren't the primary source of material; this began to then dominate his intent and boxed him in to a corner where if nothing was happening in his life, he had nothing to rap about. It drains him creatively. Thankfully, I think he's seeing that's not the way to go now.

The only thing that pisses me off about songs like Cum On Everybody (For the record, I like it), is that people complain about Relapse just being about a bunch of random shit, when songs like Cum on Everybody is pretty much line after line of random ideas and thoughts.

Yeah I know, they're witty, and that's why these songs are good. But at the same time, while Relapse isn't as witty, it's much more detailed, vivid, and coherent.
