Proof That Kendrick Could Be Bigger Than Em???

Postby LEVITIKUZ » Dec 18th, '12, 17:30

Ok now all of you don't hate me but I looked at some numbers. GkMC sold over 242,000 in its first week. Back in 99, The Slim Shady LP only sold 283,000 in its first week. While Em did sell 40,000 more we have to remember, we are living in a different age of music. Back in 99 many many albums went platinum and now very few get platinum. It was easier to sell albums back in the 99s then now. All I'm saying is looking at the numbers of albums each guy sold and also looking at the time in music each artist sold their music, Kendrick could be either bigger or just as big as Em. Thoughts?

He could be.. But anyone could be.

Its about longevity though. Look at any other person who sold a lot for their first album and even went platinum. They definitely aren't around or as big as Em is even today. Of course Kendrick is better than most these others but still.

Many many more factors come into play than that.

Like ChristinaE12 said, he could be. But I doubt it. He has 2 albums out, but he is not "everywhere". Rap fans know about him. Others don`t. None of my friends know who Kendrick is. I could be wrong, but I think he will never get close to Em, in terms of popularity, let alone be bigger.

he could but Em with his fist album was way more popular than kendrick now. Except in US, he isn't that popular..he could be a better MC then Em, but he can't be bigger then Em, never.

Kendrick is similar to Nas, Common, and Lupe and look at how long they have been around. In terms of Dre's protégés Snoop and Em are the only ones who are great. 50 and Game and just good because 50 really hasn't put out anything amazing since GRODT and Game puts out good album but relies more on the guest appearances.

We say rap fans know but others don't and yet others know Good Music, Rick Ross, Nicki, 2 Chainz, Nas, Lupe and yet Kendrick releases an album and it does way better in first week sales. Doesn't that say something?

All I can say is I don't hear Kendrick's music being played all over the place and everywhere.

No way. You don't realize. Maybe K.Dot could be the biggest in Rap music but Eminem and Jay-Z are way above that.

Kendrick doesn't appeal to kids who don't give a fuck about rap etc..

In terms of first-week sales, the two debut LPs are quite similar. However, the argument that the similar first-week sales would make Lamar "bigger" isn't very valid in my opinion. Because, whilst total (long-term) sales have went down A LOT since 99, the first-week sales in general have stayed quite constant, for many reasons (first-week price reduction, frontloaded marketing strategies etc...)

When you talk about how "big" an artist is, there's often several factors involved. Eminem reached audiences beyond the rap-scene, caused huge controversy, and had just in general a great impact on the youth of the US (fashion, style, behaviour....). This effect soon spread like a wildfire internationally. This can't [yet] be said to the same extent about Kendrick.

As a rapper, kendrick lamar can be as Big as Eminem but Eminem will still be a "bigger" artist than kdot.
He already has the universal acclaim for S80 and GKMC, he has the love from other rappers, he was crowned "the new king of the west coast" and critics fucking love him but Eminem is known all over the world :y:
Eminem had an impact on the music industry and I can only see kdot having an impact on the hip hop scene ! Kendrick will be a big hip hop artist because of fans/pairs/critics :

BBC: #1 best album of 2012 (all genre)
Fact Magazine: #1 best album of 2012 (all genre)
Hip-hop DX: #1 best hip hop album of 2012
sabotagetimes : #1 best hip hop album of 2012
Complex: #1 best album cover of 2012
Hip-hop DX: #1 best Emcee of 2012
BET: #1 best lyricist of 2012

Spin : 2nd best album of 2012 (all genre)
Time: 2nd best album of 2012 (all genre)
Consequence of Sound: 3rd best album of 2012 (all genre)
Rollingstone : 6th best album of 2012 (all genre)
Metacritic: Among the 100 highest rated albums of all time (all genre)

Complex: Cartoons & Cereals is the 2nd best song of 2012 (all genre)
Pitchfork: Bitch don't kill my vibe is the 4th best song of 2012 (all genre)
Fact Magazine: Cartoons & Cereals is the 4th best song of 2012 (all genre)

On the other hand, I can only agree with trimss, Eminem will be a better artist than kendrik even if it's still too early to compare these 2 artists (Eminem has 7 solo albums under his belt and kdot has only 2 albums...)

Critics didn't love Eminem as much as K.Dot because he was controversial. He was the bad boy, not the good kid.. That's why they love Kendrick. And because he's talented.

When you for the controversial route, you know a lot of people are going to hate on you and bring you down.

exactly :y: but he was talking about how big these artists are and I think kendrick can be very big because critics/hip hop artists/fans love him.
On the other hand, Eminem is everywhere and had a an impact on the whole music industry... can't see kendrick lamar doing that but I can see him having a great impact on the hip hop scene :y:
