Em's Flow - Album vs. Disses

Postby EmIsKingOfHipHop » Aug 27th, '13, 20:56

So my question is why is Em's flow so much better when it comes to his disses compared to his album music? His bars are structured so much better it seems like. Maybe it's a past vs. present issue, idk was just something i always thought.

Examples- the warning, the sauce, nail in the coffin, etc.

Cause the guy was born to destroy people who diss him and his family.

I've thought about this for years.. I imagine it's just a different spark when somebody is attacking him personally or attacking his ability to rap. It's a different feeling than just writing regular stuff. When he makes album I feel like his biggest flaw is always having to sound different from the last CD he put out. I remember hearing him in an interview say that once before that he needs to sound different or he doesn't feel like he has "grown". But when making a diss track there is no need for growth or experimentation with flows, his objective is to attack the other person. I hate listening to "The Warning" and thinking of what Recovery could have been with just that flow and voice instead of the yelling.

One of my favorite artists, Nas, has never changed his style and I think that is something he does right. If you have something great that your fans love and eat up then why change it?

This. The Relapse era was so awesome. Dat diss. Dat Westwood freestyle. Dat Album. Dat Refill. And people had to bullshit, so came Recovery ... which is a great album but The Warning kills it.

My opinion is that he thinks people will get tired of his sound, but it has been so long since the MMLP / eminem show flow that he could just bring it back and it'd be fresh again.

i swear if he'd start flowing like he did in his disses everyone would start sucking his dick again saying he's back yadda yadda

He over analyzes things too much i feel. He has expressed concerns that if he put out music too frequently people would get tired of it and that he needs to switch up his style to feel "growth." Neither of which is fact.

Even if his fans wouldn't get tired of him sounding the same for 14 years he probably would. I'm glad he switches it up on every album.

because if you wanna diss someone, you have to be immaculate. if you trip while you're trying to diss someone else, you make the idiot of your self.

Yep...no. Haven't you listened to "Survival"?

Survival is a perfect example of how forcing wordplay into his verses has fucked his flow up.

Mighta mistuck...PAUSE...me for bowin' out

Bitin' the dust, it'll just...PAUSE...make me angrier
Wait, let me remind you of what...PAUSE...got me this far
Picture me quittin', then draw a circle and put a line through it, slut

Horrendous writing form. The pauses destroy the smoothness. Stopping bars mid-sentence, too. Notice also how inconsistent the number of syllables in each bar is. Also, the blatant punch-in after "like getting cut" just before "I get excited" makes it sound amateur. I could go on all day about how he tortures his writing form just to sneak puns into a verse these days.

There are many songs Em flows great but doesn't diss anyone on... it's all about the beat & not about the content.

I partly agree with the constant pausing in Em's flow argument. Sometimes, it works. I think Survival is one of those cases. But when Em goes straight through a beat and fills up a verse like he used to always do, and still does at times, it has the potential to be even better. Take Welcome 2 Hell for example. Start to finish, barely any pausing and fills up the verse with multi's and just straight carnage. Thats what I like to see from Em.

Those lines mentioned in Survival, while I still like it and enjoy it. If he filled in those pauses and used some multi's, I think the verse would be even better. Same goes for some other songs. He only really does that in Survival in the end of the second verse though.
