MMLP2 is NOT a classic.

SYKE!!
It really is though.
*Critically acclaimed; 73 on Metacritic compared to the original's 78.
Would have been even higher if not for AbsolutePunk's faggotronosity.
*Got a coupla perfect scores.
*Slaying shit saleswise; 2nd best selling album of the year with barely a month's sales, No 1 single in the country, Two 2x platinum and 2 gold singles.
*Rap God was like Control's big brother heralding the shift towards hyper lyricism in the mainstream, plus it made Boy George and HuffPost mad and had Yahoo calling for a boycott, easily the most controversial/important single this year if the media didn't have Kanye's dick down their throats.
*Bad Guy is a classic record, easily as brilliant an effort as Stan.
*MMLP2 has some of Eminem's top 20 greatest songs of all time. OF ALL TIME.
*MMLP2 era Em is prime Em, what he has lost in cutting wit/shock value, he has gained with best-in-the-game wordplay.
...
Haven't listened to the golden trio in a bit so I can't say where it ranks among his discography but it's safe to say, after about 6 weeks of constant play, that Shady done blessed us with a fourth classic.

If it's not a classic, it's the one (besides the trio) that's closer to be labeled "Classic"

This. Imo it's a personal classic but if it's not then it's pretty damn close.

Solid and enjoyable album, I don't feel it's a classic though.

you know, it honestly, doesn't matter if an album is classic or not, that just a label that fans make to make their opinion and likes seem more socially respected. Classic is an arbitrary term to define lack of self consciousness. That being said, now you can understand exactly why Eminem, when asked; He never considers any of his album classics or that big of an impact, regardless of the album's reception. At the end of the day, there is not such thing as classic, as a defined term.

THAT BEING SAID!!!!

The Marshall Mathers LP 2 is one of my personal favourites from Eminem, and of the year. I enjoy listening to it and thats all that matters to me. And should be to all of you too.

Just like Jay Z's blueprint 2 suffered from too many songs (by his own admission) so does MMLP2. Especially if we include the bonus songs.

And, just to be clear, saying it has *multiple* tracks in the top 20 Eminem tracks of all time is bold. The man has an EXCELLENT discography.

That said, classic using the reviews/ sales would be cool if Encore ddnt get all that. The critics did not slam that record. Relapse was the best selling hip-hop album of that year. Recovery (which i *could* prefer) had a higher Critics/ awards/ sales/ cultural impact.

Because it doesn't feel like one to me.

It's a collection of really good songs.

But they're so diverse and alternating that there's no consistent musical identity or sound... if I can't identity a clear sonic memory or feeling... it just doesn't feel like a classic.

I can only try and reverse engineer my end result 'feeling'. When I listen to... well, even after I listened to Relapse, I had that 'classic spark' kind of feeling associated with it. It's not that the material on MMLP2 is not good enough, but just that there's not enough of a single vision for it to produce that feeling for me.

It's just a really big bag of ideas and attempts at every kind of song on one CD.

That's not a classic to me. And it just doesn't give me that feeling.

Although a great concept, Bad Guy is not a classic. Especially not in the same league as Stan. Stan was executed perfectly in every aspect, while Bad Guy's seconds verse is just...meh. Sure, the last verse is groundbreaking, but not enough to bring the whole song up to Stan's level.

Headlights has way more potential to be a classic. Everything about that song is perfect.
