Well, great emcees make bad (or at least polarizing) albums all the time. Eminem has sputtered on his quest to be as lyrically dominant as he was in the late ‘90s and early aughts. He’s battled personal demons and experimented with both a Swedish accent (Relapse) and Stadium Rock/Screamo (Recovery). He largely avoided both on MMLP2, but fans were mostly victims of our own falsely created high expectations by expecting a sequel to a classic album. Em’s “continuation” of the Marshall Mathers LP contained some of his best emceeing in nearly a decade with “Rap God.” But it also contained some unexcusable flotsam in the form of Zombie retreads and more rape and homophobic references than a guy in his 40s should be comfortable making"
Lol, what? That really doesn't make much sense and it a very dumb reason...

I think the reason it gets so much credit is because it took a step away from mainstream rap, but I don't know what anybody means when they say how great the album is. There's nothing in terms of technical MCing that we haven't heard before. I love the album, but it isn't the best I've heard.
As for Eminem, I feel like his decision to stay out of the spotlight and public eye will prevent him from ever reaching the level of fame he was once at. He's still a cultural icon and is respected by most, but guys like Kanye, Drake, Big Sean, and etc. plaster themselves all over the place between movies, endorsements, media controversy, and even spitting over modern, club sounding beats on eachothers albums.
If Em were to do more collabs and be more involved in mainstream rap (not poppy tunes like "The Monster"..) and the media, he'd be just as popular. But that's not what he's about, he likes to take his time on quality work that stays true to what he thinks is true hip hop. So I'm not surprised when guys like Kanye are more popular than him at this point, it's simply because of his choice to avoid the fame as much as possible.
