DETROIT, MI -- There's plenty of
Detroit and overall Michigan
representation in a new list of
"World's Greatest Singers" by vocal
range that surfaced online this week.
The website concerthotels.com
conducted interesting research about
high notes and low notes for
performers and declared Guns N'
Roses frontman Axl Rose No. 1.
But several performers with ties to the
Great Lakes State also made the cut in
the categories of overall vocal range,
highest notes and lowest notes.
Charts on the website show the
highest and lowest notes each artist
hit in the recording studio.
A breakdown of those with Detroit
and Michigan ties, including those
who performed under the Motown
label, in each category and their
ranking:
Overall vocal range; rank
Marvin Gaye - 6
Michael Jackson - 26
Iggy Pop - 30
Aretha Franklin - 37
Eminem - 41
David Ruffin - 62
Smokey Robinson - 69
Highest notes; ranking
Marvin Gaye - 14
Aretha Franklin - 28
Smokey Robinson - 54
Eminem - 62
Iggy Pop - 66
David Ruffin -71
Lowest notes; ranking
Iggy Pop - 9
Marvin Gaye - 15
Eminem - 18
David Ruffin - 31
Aretha Franklin - 40
Smokey Robinson - 67
....
Okay, this is sort of funny

Em does have a good grasp on melody, but I think the list is solely about vocal range.
Still funny, though.

Menzo wrote:Em obviously has a grasp on melody and his layered singing is nice, but it's not 'real' singing.

Dumb inclusion.

Wouldn't entirely agree. That Rhyme or Reason hook is sung son. And sung well.

He should utilize that middling range more, because it sounds fresh and really good.

He's not good at shifting between ranges and having much of a bridge there, but his grasp of melody is pretty much 2nd to none. Everything he creates is infectious and to-the-second perfect in timing.

"Vocal range" is pretty much meaningless. Pretty much anyone can hit a high note and a low note, but that's irrelevant when singing actual music.

The important thing is which notes in between you can hit, and whether it's chest or head voice.
