Relapse is Epic

Postby EminemBase » Jan 9th, '10, 01:29

Many people dislike it for the many accents he dips in and out of. Whatever. Been enough debates about that, can't be bothered with another one.

But just listening to some of the album tracks again. Haven't listened to many of them for a little while because I seriously overplayed them at one point. For a long time.

I think people who say the album has no re-play value are nuts. The flows are so crafted and the wordplay is so beautiful, it's very addictive to me.

His new music, even if not on-par with some older material... In some aspects, content-wise or whatever, is on nearly another level in addiction to me.

Just something about these new... Pin-point flows and the accent(s) enhance most songs for me. Especially like "Stay Wide Awake". Really emphasizes the rhymes and just makes listening to the actual rap exciting and enjoyable. Which is more than can be said for so much other rap.

Nearly every song is great for a different reasons. Only major flaw is "Crack a Bottle" which wasn't meant for the album anyway and you can tell. And it's mainly because of 50's awful verse. "Beautiful" also shouldn't of been on there either IMO. Good song but doesn't fit.

I think the album would of been better if he'd just gone all out with the concept. Like the 'Tonya' skit is really great. Actually fits for once. It'll be a while before I can properly rank the album against his others. I mean, already above 'Encore' but... A little while before I can try against the rest.

But it's definitely a great album IMO.

Relapse
Eminem is truly in his own dark and demented world.
where like his later guest spots proved unequivocally, Em can still rhyme circles around your favorite artist. Deceptively effortless. :worship:

i agree with u totally. Relapse doesnt get enough credit than it should. Accent or not, his wordplay is probably the best ive seen, including all his other albums. Thing about it is he just came off of drugs when he made most of Relapse, which is scary to think about. Cant imagine what he'll do on R2. But, im glad he put beautiful and songs like that at the end because it shows him starting to recognize his addiction. First half of the album is him on drugs/slim shady goin back to his old ways. Then the second half we start getting a sober em. Underground ends the album perfect showing hes back and coming with vengence. This album has plenty of replay value.

That's what makes the album good where it would have fell off normally.

Relapse is simply 'good' to me. My album ranking:

1.MMLP
2.SSLP/Eminem Show (tie)
4.Relapse
5.Encore

Shouldn't this be in shady review's  , but yeah it was decent but it was abit of the same old, same old with each track apart from beautiful and cab, all about raping, killing and drugs. Would of preferred abit more variety it's epic for a horrorcore album though. :flower:

Deja Vu is honestly the only song I think is good when I look back at the album. He might've had a good flow and some good lyrics on songs like Stay Wide Awake, but they are still cheesy as fuck, imo. Being in the mind of a serial killer is just silly and I hope he gets off of it. It's what he used to be like, I know. But on Relapse it seemed like he was just rambling on and on about killing without too much wit. That's why it got pretty old to me.

It's not going to be his best album. He hadn't done a big project for about 4 or 5 years. He's definitely sharper now with Drop The World, The Warning, Forever, his Cypher, etc.

Swap a few songs off refill & you've got one really crazy album.

Opinion may change over time. However, Remember TES was downplayed when it first dropped, now some people consider it a classic.

I don't agree that the songs were shit just because they were mainly all about killing etc.

1997-2001 he pretty much rapped exclusively about rap, drugs and his life. But his personal stuff showed up more in glimmers and mentions as apposed to full blown songs. Aside from the handful of classics we all know from that time period of course.

2002-2005 it was all personal stuff basically. It was reversed, it was him just pouring his thoughts and life through his pen with the occasional random dissing, killing, jabs and so on.

I'd pretty much heard all I needed to hear about his life until then.

So I don't know why people wanted him to come back and moan some more lol. What would he write about. "Deja Vu" and "Beautiful" sum it all up. You seriously wanna hear an entire album of him bitching about his drug habits as apposed to poking fun at them and being zany. Fuck that.

I've heard all I need to hear about Kim, Halie, his mother and how shit his past was. So for him to come back in 2009 and just keep doing that would of been the truly cheesy option.

I don't see how anybody can find "Stay Wide Awake" cheesy. It's got a great two-part layered chorus, it's packed full of lyricism, irony, tongue-in-cheek, playful psychoness, it's just fantastic. He'd spent so many years just complaining, Relapse felt like a real rap-treat. Just rhyming like fuck again.

I personally loved it. I'm glad he'd re-done Relapse 2 as he sounds even more focused and intent on making something extra-special but I think Relapse is a great album. People are also acting like he's just suddenly started rapping randomly. Some kids just wanna hear him bitching again so they can sit and cry in depression to him lmao.

I've got his older shit for that. I don't want a repeat performance. It was a joy hearing him put his all into his art again and to be honest, that's not AS possible when you're rapping about personal things as you always have to give up some... Rhyme-muscles in the interest of getting your message across.

I love wordplay and lyricism. And he picked serial killing because it's an extremity. You can pull a lot of visuals out of violence. You can also inject a lot of irony and twisted humour. Like Tarrantino does. I find it endlessly entertaining. But whatever, each to their own.
