Three classic albums, then those other ones.

Postby Jimmy Conway » Sep 22nd, '13, 09:42

That seems to be the mindset for most people towards Em's catalog and I don't feel that is fair to Relapse.

MMLP had 14 tracks.

Take 14 Relapse Era songs and you might have something like this.

1."My Darling"
2."3 a.m."
3."My Mom"
4."Insane"
5."Bagpipes From Baghdad"
6."Hello"
7."Careful What You Wish For"
8."Same Song & Dance"
9."Buffalo Bill"
10."Stay Wide Awake"
11."Underground
12."Must Be the Ganja"
13."Elevator"
14."Music Box"

Definitely not with "My Darling" and "Careful What You Wish For" on there...

"Careful What You Wish For" is not a 'Relapse' era track. He included it as a bonus but it's from his batch of self-produced material that was for King Mathers or whatever batch of material around that time, along with "Beautiful" - hence why the style and flow and writing are similar.

It's nothing like Relapse.

But if you take the last 3 dogshit tracks off the original tracklist... yes, that's a classic to me.

Beautiful was confirmed by Em to be from back then.

The other two wasn't, so I'm going to assume they weren't.

Em can switch "the style and flow and writing" up at any time(the warning) so that point isn't really a good one.

Also, those two songs are good, especially Careful What you Wish For

I would say Encore would be closer to a classic if it had those 3 tracks on it. Over the last 2 years, Encore has aged well and I can't listen to most Recovery songs. Love listening to those few tracks on 8 Mile. If Em made an 8 Mile LP album with Lose Yourself as the single, it would have been a classic.

It would have still been really shitty.

And those songs didn't exist then,so, looking at it that way doesn't really matter.

You can HEAR that they're not from the Relapse sessions.

So you think he'd intentionally rhyme much worse for the sake of it?

What do you mean man, you can hear that "Careful What You Wish For" is not from 08/the Relapse sessions, in his style, and also the music.

He can switch-up styles, as always - but he always sticks to a particular sound, for an album. CWYWF sounds like "Beautiful" / 07 shit, and nothing like Relapse shit.

Also "eight years later I'm still at it" 1999 + 8 = 2007. Also still says he's a "sleeping pill addict", quite clearly this song was made during his addict years, for KM or whatever. But not Relapse.

And even if it is quite good... it doesn't at all fit on the album, and sounds nothing like the other tracks... so why have it there? You can make a much better classic without it. The real Relapse material (Relapse 1 + Refill) is more than enough to make a back-to-front consistent banging classic.

''My Darling'' would've been great as the first track on the album.
Fuck top five, bitch, I'm top four
And that includes Biggie and Pac, whore
And I got an Evil Twin
So who the fuck do you think that third and that fourth spot's for?

Yeah well clearly that was one of the first tracks...

Either that or he had the concept of ' my darling ' for KM.

As on the Dr. West skit the demon voice is even saying DARLING.

Relapse is close to one for me, not quite. But I love Relapse more than SSLP.

I honestly think that "My Darling" >>>> "3 A.M" and "My Mom" at least. Sometimes the complexity of rhymes just doesnt matter.

It's not just about the complexity of the rhymes though yo...

His delivery, the energy, the precision...

I just could never find such a sluggish and sloppy track better than such madness on-crack.

Conceptually it's a cool track but the first verse is a waste, and it's like he wrote that randomly, and then fell in to the concept... but the fact he didn't re-write the first just makes it feel lazy as fuck to me... overall it's a good song, but I find "3am" and "My Mom" especially SOOOO much more enjoyable, and really enjoyable regardless to listen to. They both beat the shit out of it for me.
