How did people react to Encore when it first came out?

Postby AAAAAAAAAAND » Oct 16th, '14, 19:34

I wasn't an Em fan at this point. Did people believe it sucked immediately? It seems like Em could do no wrong before this point, so it must have been unbelievable that he would put something like Encore out (whether you like it or not, it's almost objectively worse than MMLP and TES, and probably SSLP too).
Jump around.

TES>MMLP, Encore>Recovery, MMLP2>SSLP, Relapse>All

I didn't really follow Encore's transition back then, but around the time Recovery was coming out, I found a thread from rapbasement.com about the Encore tracklist. Most on there thought it was a fake because of names like Big Weenie.

Edit--Here's the thread I made. The link on there unfortunately doesn't work anymore.

Shadymania doesn't even begin to describe how famous eminem was when this record came out. People thought just lose it was a decoy single to discourage piracy. Because I had been following em since trss (when I was 11), I didn't fully understand everything em was discussing in some Encore tracks like yellow brick road or like toy soldiers. I didn't start to appreciate some of the genius buried in the album until the next seven cds were all so much worse

Can only speak for myself but i was 19 when Encore dropped,i stood outside the record shop waiting for them to open.I was so disappointed after first listen i cant even describe it.My friends didnt like it either.
I have never been so disappointed over a rap album ever.
From SSLP to MMLP to TES to Encore...classic after classic than that shit.Lol
I remember EM getting bad reviews and ton of hate because of the Loose Yourself video where he mocked MJ.

The posetive thing for me with this album is the bonus songs.
I love Ricky Ticky Toc,Love You More and We As Americans.
Still bump those tracks :y:
Cry babies, maybe my way that i use words is loose
but you turds better be careful how you choose yours
Cause feelings scar, but egos bruise worse
And the truth hurts, shit no wonder youre sore losers

As a 13 year old, I loved it. I didn't compare it to other albums or anything.
I remember buying it the day it came out, I blasted the heck out of it.

I loved it when it first came out, being the impressionable young lad I was.

From what I understand, some people (mostly young Stans) loved the shit out of it but some more sensible people at the time realized something was wrong.

In Germany the people were dissapointed from Encore .

They thought it was a step backwards from TES , and they were right imo.

You don't even need to say "imo" it is objectively a huge step backwards lol. But yeah, I liked the album when I was younger and as I started listening to more and more rap I learned what made it so bad, especially in comparison to his other work. It was the album that introduced me to Eminem after all. Didn't follow the hype tho.

I have a couple of friends who are casual Em fans

we used to talk about hip-hop and they said their favorite Eminem album was Encore being COMPLETELY SERIOUS.

I just cracked up and said no.

Yeah, the internet and all that wasn't really mainstream yet, so all the cynics and shit weren't around to outnumber the pack mentality on message boards. Stans ruled the world.
