He wouldn't be referring to himself as a sleeping pill addict if it was made in 07. He was in denial, thinking he could still control it.

"just pop another pill, yeah I bet that you will" - Eminem, 2005.
Doesn't sound like denial to me, and that was two years earlier.

I like it better than Relapse, but it's still so far from a classic that statements like that hurt my heart.

Eminem never giving us another classic imo.

He wouldn't be in denial because he went to rehab for a sleeping pill addiction in 2005. In 2007 he was mostly using Vicodin, Valium, and Methadone

Singin' "Bagpipes from Baghdad" again
In my dad's drag draggin' a faggot in a Glad bag
Won't be the last time I make a dramatic entrance like that again
You thought I was lyin' when I said I think that I'm crossin' the line again
I've lost my mind, caution oh God I think I've just thought of another fucking line
Forgive me father, for I have sinned
But hip hop has left me brainwashed with a violent streak

He made When I'm Gone right after getting out of rehab in 2005, not realizing how serious it was. In 2007, he was on his way to dying. There's no way he could have come up with the stuff in the first verse of that song in 2007...that was "Pistol Poppin" era.

Not to mention, Eminem said that "Beautiful" was the only song from the drug period on Relapse, because it was the only song from that period he could stand.

I think this was more along the lines of commentary involving flip flopping critics, rather than him believing Encore would later be amazing. The critics called his early work poor, then said they were masterpieces years later.

UofL has spoken.

Yes but Careful What You Wish For was a bonus song on Relapse. And based on 50 Ways and The Apple I think 2007 Eminem could have made careful what you wish for. And post 2007 would have had news reports mentioning his weight gain and hospitalization in the beginning

I would have an easier time believing he wrote that in late 2005 or early 2006 than 2007. 2007 was Eminem headed towards death. He couldn't do much of anything at that point, and I doubt he'd be openly calling himself a "sleeping pill addict" when it had gotten that bad.
