How old are you?
Um...it's not an age thing. It's just that I was brought up in a culture and community where "western" music was never on anyone's radar and no one cared about pop/rock/whatever...
Until last year, for me rap music was: black people with chains, gang violence, swearing, misogyny, drugs, someone named Tupac Shakur had been killed and someone else named Jay-Z was very rich and married to some famous singer. A chance conversation introduced me to some white rapper named Eminem who had been ranked no. 1 on some list. I was bored with work and randomly opened Em's Wikipedia page. It took a while for me to decide to listen to just one song by him (what with the swearing, homophobia, misogyny, killing his wife, hatred for his mother, etc., I was very confident it was not for me or, in fact, anyone else!). And a few minutes after that, I was sitting in front of my machine stunned, having just listened to Lose Yourself for the first time. The rest is history (but it was important that I was introduced to his mature songs like NA, LTWYL and INAD first)!
