Pretty sure they don't mean "Eminem should get back to swallowing pills." They probably just mean marijuana, people act like the only drug he's done was pills when recording Encore. Do you really think he was sober recording the MMLP?

No, he did drugs when he went on tour. It was recreational. He was too busy working two jobs and trying to afford new diapers for Hailie when he was making SSEP, which was the majority of SSLP...plus writing more lyrics after SSEP before he was about to give up when the record deal fell through (which was when he popped Tylenol one night in what people mistakenly call a "suicide attempt").

As for recording MMLP on drugs - I highly doubt it. His enunciation and flow are too crisp and clear to have been hindered by drugs. And he was obsessive about his music before he became a pill addict. He said something in an article after SSLP came out about writing "a couple songs for the next album" on ecstasy, but he described them as "about bouncing off walls and shit." That doesn't match the description of any of the songs on the album. I'm betting they threw them away because they were stupid.

That shit is heartbreaking. All he's thinking about in that 04 interview is when are people going to start asking, why isn't the music as good as it used to be or whatever. He probably knew he was going to OD eventually too. I'm very grateful he made it to where he is now. Imagine if he had died that christmas. Fuck it, what if he never even took the methadone in the first place, and he was so far gone he was finally just now putting out his first new music since king mathers? I would not want to live in that world. Everyone should be happy we don't.

Eminem and Dre only did 3 songs on SSLP, first of all. The rest of it was from the SSEP or written in between SSEP and hitting the studio with Dre. Secondly, it's pretty clear nothing they did on ecstasy made MMLP.

Their first day in the studio, the pair knocked off "My Name Is" in about an hour, and as much as that song proved that Em is a brother from another planet, they were just warming up. "I wrote two songs for the next album on ecstasy," Eminem says. "Shit about bouncing off walls, going straight through 'em, falling down twenty stories. Crazy. That's what we do when I'm in the studio with Dre." Dr. Dre on E? "Ha ha," Dre laughs. "He didn't say that! It's true, though. We get in there, get bugged out, stay in the studio for fuckin' two days. Then you're dead for three days. Then you wake up, pop the tape in, like, 'Let me see what I've done.'"
