not afraid went #1 for the exact same reason eminem will always sell good his first week. He has a HUGE fanbase, and his fanbase is always there (it's kinda like Michael Jackson in a sense.) His "main" fanbase is bigger than other mainstream artist right now, which is why eminem sells good at first. The issue with that is after his fans buy his albums, is anyone else going to? A lot of people who never liked Jay-z bought Blueprint 3 because of the songs on the radio. No One is going to buy recovery because of Not Afraid (or little to a few people) but if LTWYL comes out on the radio, a bunch of new fans will buy the album.

Yeah same here, a lot of rock fans tell me they like it

But the reason I think Jay is so respected is cause he's been out for so long, and he's still dropping hit after hit. Same goes for Eminem. The only difference is that Jay dumbs down his lyrics to appeal to a larger fanbase, while Eminem does the exact opposite(improves his lyrics) and gets some of those same fans plus more.

Obviously it's just opinion whoever people think is better, so just let him think what he wants cause usually once people have that one favorite rapper it's hard to change their mind. For me it's like when you first hear a song from an amazing artist you have a certain amount of confidence in that artist that you subconsciously might not want to give as much to another artist.
I'm not saying necessarily that they're not as talented, just might not have related to the listener as much as the other artist.

To me though they both make great songs and great albums so I respect both of them, but I relate to Eminem more and he is more entertaining to me so he'll always me one of my favorite rappers if not the best.
