It was initially titled The Chronic 2000 to imply being a sequel to his debut solo effort The Chronic but was re-titled 2001 after Death Row Records released an unrelated compilation album with the title Chronic 2000: Still Smokin in May 1999.

This but also that Death Row Records album dissed the fuck outta Em, Dre, Nate Dogg, Snoop - anyway who was on or related to Aftermath really. Listen to it, it's not good lyrically or anything but Em gets slaughtered - personal fucking attacks on there. Thats what the whole "Whole career without ever mentioning Suge" line is all about.

So calling it 2001 was
1) Had to be changed due to the name of the Death Row album
2) Also becuase the album was about Dre coming back and a lot of it responds to claims of Dre being shit on the Death Row album. So it was like "you got 2000?, we got 2001" baby!

Cool, huh?
