I was listening to 'Observations' the other day and picked out this line...
"Young cats rapping 'bout a Mercedes, getting cash and ladies/ lot of old cats still in the 80's. but somewhere inbetween, I gleam and ignite the whole scene"
It's such a perfect anaylsis of himself.
Despite work on his first album being started in the late 1980's he has moved with the times better than ANY other rapper from that time period.
Even from his 1990 debut to 1995's 'Sittin' On Chrome' he adapts, but the biggest change is on from that album to 2001's Disposable Arts. He doesnt lose any of his rhyming skills but has more up to date beats and a fresher style and conceptual ideas.
During the time he took a break (1995-2001), one of the biggest changes in hip hop kinda took place yet he comes back in 2001 not fased at all and effortlessly adapts to the change without surcumbing to the 'bling bling' bullshit but still sounding new and fresh.
Immense.
Id do anything for a Ace solo album soon - he spit well on that 2009 collab album with Edo G but it wasn't the most enjoyable album as a whole.
