Black Milk

Postby Hiphopdane » Dec 19th, '10, 18:50

Anybody into his music? I downloaded Tronic and Album of the year the other day and have been bumping them a lot to get to know his craft. For those who don't know, he is a rapper and producer from Detroit and has produced for rappers such as Royce da 5'9", Proof, Canibus, KRS-one and Pharoahe Monch.

His "classic" hip hop sound reminds me a bit of Madlib and DJ Premier which is a good thing.

It's quite amazing how many good producers that have come out of Detroit; J Dilla, Black Milk, Mr. Porter and even Eminem.

Much like dR3, I'm a huge fan of Black Milk
And, unlike dR3, I still love AOTY lol.

Madlib and Premo? No way man. He was clearly inspired almost completely by Dilla. He even raps and produces like he did.

Losing Out>*

I haven't heard his new album but his beats are always full of life. Never stagnant. He's a pretty alright rapper but he's a great musician.

HHD, check out Elzhi - The Preface, thats my favourite album produced by Black Milk
Same sword they knight you they gon' good night you with
Sh.., Thats' only half if they like you
That ain't even the half what they might do
Don't believe me, ask Michael
See Martin, see Malcolm
You see Biggie, see Pac, see success and its outcome
See Jesus, see Judas; see Caesar, see Brutus
See success is like suicide
Suicide, it's a suicide
If you succeed, prepare to be crucified

You're right, Milk is majorly infuenced by Dilla, especially his early work like Popular Demand, in fairness though, Dilla isn't a bad person to base you're style on!

I didn't mean that they make similar beats, just that his "old school" sound - although he mostly makes modern stuff - gives me the same feeling as Premo and Madlib's beats. I should have made that more clear.

Of those I've heard, he is definitely one of the most exciting young producers out there at the moment. A shame guys like him probably never will hit the mainstream because their productions sometimes take a few listens to fully appreciate the greatness of. A lot of what's popular today is just something that you listen to once or twice and then you probably won't listen to it ever again. His sound has so many layers and creative details it's not even funny.

You can say it doesn't take 500 samples and complexity to make a good beat but Milk is like a less underground Stoupe in the way that his music is just beautiful chaos. It's intricate but like poetry.

He should really make a collab album imo.

I've only heard Deadly Melody and he is really good. I just haven't got around to listening to AOTY. Soon though, I will. :D
