That depends strictly on the contract that was signed when the recording was made, so there is a great deal of varience. Generally speaking about $1.25 per sale of an album and .03 per sale of a single. The amount of per album money is greatly determined by the singer/band. In the 1980's Michael Jackson signed a contract to get $2.45 per album and "Thriller" sold 40,000,000 albums - that alone was $98,000,000. Crazy

It varies for every artist - the artist tries to get as much as possible the record company does the same! The only thing that gives the artist ANY leverage - is previous sales!!

Rappers make their money through concerts and live performances..

If that's directed to me then you should be informed that Tech N9ne does a crazy amount of live performances & tours. So, he's definitely a rich guy.

Who the hell's Tech 9?

Are you serious?

It's not a "big obsession" it's curiosity on how the industry works. If you read my post, I wanted too know who was living well but not rich, which is how I'll be after I graduate college. Basically I wanted to see what type of rapper will have comparable earnings to what I will once I've entered my career.

Lol, record deals actually usually used to be fairer. Now, with 360 deals being the trend, the label are taking all the artists earnings.

An typical old deal, which the artist would typically get 12% of album sales. The company would obviously give money for studio time/add. musicians/instruments, etc even Video shooting, promotions and this is before we get in PRS & MCPS where royalties are collected for however a track is used. from ads to video games to live shows. Basically only composers, songwriters and publishers get paid which means for a typical popstar, they dont get shit. Now add to that falling album sales, no wonder artists tour like crazy. So you gotta understand most rappers aren't that rich like they claim. You'll get lucky to break even
