It's pretty obvious... For example, when Parker plays that "Peter Parker" sound Slug uses it.

If you've spent time around the hip hop community you learn to decipher prewritten from freestyle. Well, for the most part. If the person is REALLY good it's hard to tell the difference between the two... Eyedea, for example, is hard to tell between written and freestyle; Cos he's THAT good.

For the most part, you can tell when something is freestyled by the lack of consistant emotion and the pauses between lines or in the middle of lines (thinking of what to say next). Also, as Thomas said, if you're rapping consistantly about the things that are surrounding you it's a pretty obvious indication that you're freestyling. Plus, slug mentions how people say he sucks at freestyling because he's oldschool and doesn't call prewritten shit 'freestyles', he actually freestyles off the top.

Slug is a God. There are only a handful of Emcees who can actually freestyle off the top as well as that.

These guys are probably the best freestylers I've ever seen.

Yeah, I love how Okwerdz mentions Karate Kid, then The Saurus has that "I got kicked out of karate class for whipping Mr Miagi's ass" line. So good.
