L.A.S.E.R.S My Review

Postby slimshadylappin » Mar 9th, '11, 02:00

It is finally march 8th meaning I now have the chance to hear L.A.S.E.R.S in entirety and in CDQ form.

Lasers was pretty much what I thought it would be only more to the extreme. Lots of songs with pop friendly hooks but with good lyrics.

This isn't the Lupe I fell in love with. When I bought Food and Liquor that album was everything to me. It was the first hip hop album I ever bought and is probably still my favourite. What made it so special? It was more then music. I may not be a good rater of lyrics and production but I can safely say that album excelled at everything while still being larger then life. The meaning of the songs varied. It was more like life in a CD then anything else.

Anyway the reason I bring this up is because I think that Lupe is gone. Lasers is not larger then life. Lasers is good music. With that out of the way I can now say that even if Lasers was perfect lyrically and such it would still not be his best album. However it is not perfect lyrically. It is a step down from the last two albums. The rhyming isn't as sharp. It is more simplistic and doesn't sound quite like Lupe. Saying this it is still a very lyrical album. One listen to Never Forget will show Lupe still has it. But I feel like I can not appreciate lyrics because of the radio type feel. So to talk about the feel. As I stated before it feels like, well Recovery. Almost every song has a pop like hook and beats. Its dissapoiting but not unexpected.

Overall I think I am very biased towards this album. I can not except this album because this isn't what I expect a Lupe album to sound like. I can see it is still a good album. But I can't appreciate it. I will give it a 8/10

Favourite tracks: All Black Everything, Beautiful Lasers and Never Forget You

This is why I can't really enjoy it. I don't want Lupe to make summer music. I never said it was a bad album

it's interesting how people (including Lupe himself) say that it's a more lighter, happier album.

but to me, half of the songs are intense, angry, and seem to have a subconscious feeling of dark emotion. even the instrumentals, poppy as they may be, have a slight sense of sadness or seriousness to them. the songs i am referring to are:

"Letting Go", "Words I Never Said", "Beautiful Lights", "State Run Radio" (sounds happy and light, but has an underlined seriousness to the subject matter), "Break The Chain", "Never Forget You"

looking at the songs from this point of view has helped me appreciate the album even more.

Words I Never Said and Beautiful Lasers do not sound happy and light. WINS is a angry political song and Beautiful Lasers is just depressing. But it seems that there are just too many happy and light songs like for a Lupe album. Or mabye Im just not used to it
