Platinum albums in 2013?

For discussion of mainstream Hip Hop or Urban music.

You're kinda being ignorant right now. T.I was never close to Eminem's level, sales wise. Jay-Z had no singles, once again. BP3 sold a lot (a lot being still LESS than Relapse) because it had Empire State of Mind (which was bigger than any Relapse single).

The most sold Hip Hop albums since 2009 are something like Recovery and Relapse. I think it sold even more than Take Care or Carter 4.

But we'll have this debate again when he'll go platinum.

Justin Timberlake is a veteran, by the way. You could also consider Rihanna as one.

Relapse was stuck on a mill & a half selling 10k a week & then it did 160k or so first week after the release of a single with Drake and Lil Wayne.

TI was never close to Eminem's level but he used to have platinum albums. Kanye has questionable material with no singles but the promotion of Yeezus was brilliant and everybody knows that he released an album a few weeks ago

Can he do these numbers without Rihanna, Lil Wayne and Pink ? Em is big but I can't see him going multi-platinum with a Relapse-type album

I have some numbers but they don't include 2011, so I did some maths and tried to figure it out myself.

Wikipedia says Recovery sold 3.4 million copies by the end of 2010. Now, it's around 4,449,644.

2011:
Eminem - Recovery - 756177 (approximatively. I did 2013 final numbers - 2010 final numbers - 2012 sales - 2013 sales)

2012:
Eminem - Recovery - 218,142

2013:
Eminem - Recovery -75,325

More than 303 000 Eminem albums were bought in 2013.

Of course he can. He has a bigger fanbase now than when Relapse was released. All these teenagers.. C'mon.

LOL, people hated the Wayne feature and hated Em for collaborating with him. Most of the people I know deleted that song after they got the album.
Pink had a minor role and the song was just a free pre-album track to keep up the buzz.
Granted, it was used in a commercial but I doubt that had much to do with his sales as the song didn't even sell well.

Rihanna had little to do with the album selling so much, if we compare Not Afraid to LTWYL in terms of sales you'll see that Not Afraid is just about a million copies away from it. Even ww sales are close.

Not to forget that Cinderella Man has reached gold status and it wasn't even a single. Just a random song.

Relapse has not been selling respectable amounts because they're not shipping copies anymore, people who buy it, buy it through iTunes. That is a fact because I asked a Virgin Megastore worker.

Eminem has 2 more albums in him before people start to ignore his new releases, I know what you mean and I agree with you but Em's music is still special to us fans and to the public so it's gonna be a while before they get sick of him.

I know what you mean but Love the way you lie had a lot to do with the album selling so much, a second and successful single will always help you to sell well in the long run.

Relapse was stuck at 1.5 Mill because Eminem couldn't make more than 1 radio hit, then the album did 160K a week cause Eminem released a single with Drake, Kanye West and Lil Wayne.

^ No, it didn't do 160 000 a week because of that song. It did that much because of Refill. You don't seem to know what you're talking about.

Refill sales are added to Relapse, and that's why it did that much. It didn't sell more JUST off of Forever.

Forever (Drake song)
U.S. Billboard Hot 100 8
U.S. Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs 2
U.S. Billboard Rap Songs[18] 1

3xPlatinum

Forever definitely helped Relapse Refill tbh

Yeah. Eminem is a household name. You think he's just another rapper in the rap game but he's not. He's bigger than rap, and his sales are bigger than rap.

Help me fill this list of at artists who can go more than 2x platinum (and have done it at least once since let's say 2009):

Justin Timberlake, Taylor Swift, Adele, Eminem and maybe Drake.

We didn't know about Forever being on the album until the tracklist dropped though.

Pretty sure Drake will do at least 800K first week.
he did 630 with take care and it took him something like 1 year to do more than 2x plat

And the Grammy Awards will probably boost the album sales for 6 the nominees :sweating:

Who went gold in 2012/2013 ?

Lil Wayne, 2 Chainz, Rick Ross, TI ? is that all ?
