Is Snoop Dogg now a puppet?

Postby Shuttle Destroyer » Oct 23rd, '13, 08:26

I mean, he turned into Snoop Lion for a reagge album and even had a doccumentary and a book called "Reincarnated" that showed how he was living in his new found jamaican doutriny
Now, he's Snoopzilla and got a new album called 7 days of funk coming out, inspired in the g funk old school sound he used to have but bringing it to 2013, you know, with a futuristic feel

I admire those decisions. Choosing a complete new route to go musically and intirely becoming part of it after more than 20 years of carrer is something great, no doubt. That goes for Snoop Lion. As far as Snoopzilla, I also think this is great. He's looking for that old vibe. How many artists do you know that has fans wanting the old artist back with the sound he used to do. Snoop is doing that on his own.

So, my question here is not about how good and validated are these two projects Snoop had.
My question is how far do you think Snoop is in command of all these recent decisions on his career.

Do you think he created everything from his new names to his new directions and album titles, for instance, or does his managers, record label, someone or a group of people are taking Snoop wherever they think it will sell and give them money, telling snoop what to do, handing him instrumentals and lyrics, putting camera crews behind him so they can make a doccumentary promoting the album and stuff like that.

I think Snoop has made more than enough money to control the course of his own career.

He's one of those "old greats" who can essentially do whatever they want now because their new stuff isn't as important to the music canon. The main source of profit for Snoop these days are replays of his old songs (Gin & Juice, Drop It Like It's Hot) and appearances on commercials/movies/other artist's songs.

At this point, his albums are such a paltry part of his net worth that they have essentially become pet projects.

Think about it, did Doggumentary NEED to be a success? And when it wasn't, did Snoop NEED to do that Wiz Kalifa album to stay relevent? Not really, Snoop will always be a pop culture icon no matter what his output is.

I agree with everything you said, he is one of those artists that can decide what to do with their music
But is he in control of those projects that I've quoted or he's letting other people drive his career where they want, imposing these new directions?

How much of Snoop Lion and Snoopzilla came from Snoop Dogg?

EDIT: 7 days of funk confirmed to be legit Snoop

Dude doesn't know what he even wants anymore.
"So one last time, I'm back, 'fore it fades into black and it's all over, behold the final chapter in the saga, trying to recapture that lightning trapped in a bottle twice, the magic that started it all...tragic portrait of an artist tortured....trapped in his own drawings..." - Bruce.

Snoop has mass appeal. He'll be one of the rappers from our generation remembered and listened to 50 years from now. Watch.

He does whatever he wants & that's actually the opposite of what a puppet is.

I get your point though... but like I've said many times Snoop has adapted to still be relevant no matter what. He's a rap vet who was in his prime in like early/mid 90's & that is the time frame he belongs too. It is 2013 & he's still active & relevant which means he's found way to be relevant in two decades he doesn't belong to amongst rappers totally different than what he was in his prime.

Pretty much he's been after money & relevancy since he left Death Row & he's been on top of it. I haven't been buying his albums for a while now but I still admire his longevity.

Yes, I just questioned myself how much of his decisions comes from him nowadays, but they actually seem legit if you think about it, specially after that vido I posted

Yeah... he's doing whatever the hell he wants without a second thought & works with absolutely everyone who pays the fee no matter what... even if we talk about C & D artists from small countries & all that.
