I'm a big fan of most of the shit Donald Glover does. Loved Culdesac, Camp, EP, and the I Am Just a Rapper tapes. Royalty, Poindexter, and Sick Boi aren't great, but they have some highlights. Community is my favorite sitcom, Derrick Comedy is so fucking funny, and I've seen Weirdo several times and listened to it more than that. The point of all this is to say that I'm very mixed about his recent shit. The Pound Cake freestyle is probably the best thing he's done since Camp and I really like Yaphet Kotto, but I'm not really into Worldstar and 3005, that Centipede track is just awful, and the Jhene Aiko song would have been better without him. I have no idea what to expect from Because the Internet. It seems like he's being really pretentious lately and I wish he'd go back to just being the guy from Culdesac or even Camp.

I agree and disagree on some points.

While I hold Camp and EP on a fucking high ass pedestal, I think Royalty isn't very good. I didn't like his style. It's too braggy and trappy. We Ain't Them is the only track I like on it. Culdesac was pretty solid all around, still bump it too.

His stuff this year: Centipede, Yaphet Kotto, 3005, Bed Peace feature, and Pound Cake freestyle have all been so fucking good. I'm torn on Worldstar, since it's so new, needs to sink in more. However, it's definitely growing on me. It feels all too familiar to Royalty.

With that said, "Because the Internet", I think, is going to be awesome. "Shadows" he showed in Cleveland sounds amazing.

"Cinematic" is exactly how I describe Camp, so that makes me cream.

I honestly feel like Camp's production is absolutely stellar. Everything blends together so well. "Outside" is just like, one of my favorite tracks of all-time. Gah!! Lol

As for Centipede, I love the intro and shit. For some reason it reminds me of my mother singing me lullabies when I was a kid (I know he used to sing that when he was a kid, maybe that's why) - plus I love the verses.

I'm hoping for like, 14-17 tracks on Because the Internet. Camp only had 12 (11 technically, Letter Home was a little singing interlude) but yeah... I listened to Centipede, Yaphet and 3005 back to back to back and hot damn, I'm so fucking stoked.

Outside is fucking magnificent. Easily my favorite Gambino song and one of the most cinematic tracks I've ever heard both in terms of production and lyricism. It doesn't need a video because the lyrics are descriptive enough you can just visualize it. Donald's punchlines and all the songs about girls aren't nearly as interesting to me as when he talks about real personal shit. The story he tells at the end of That Power is so uniquely Donald Glover and he frames it all in such a poignant and relatable way. Fuck It All, The Lost, and Not Going Back are my other favorite Gambino songs. These Girls is also up there mostly for the hook. Garfunkel and Oates ...

The That Power monologue was actually written by fellow Derrick Comedy member D.C. Pierson, who's featured on "Starlight" on Poindexter. But still, it's equally D.C.'s writing and Donald's delivery that makes it what it is.
