I'd always rather have 20 songs as opposed to ten. I want so much content that I'm bound to get my money's worth. I mean, tastes differ. A 20 song album is more likely to have 10 good songs on it than a 10 track album is.

I realize I'm in the minority on this, though. Obviously, there are classic albums that are short. But most artists aren't capable of putting out perfect albums. Especially mainstream artists who have to worry about singles and radio play.

That's how you get bad albums with, "some high points but too many low points." Those albums are forgettable and never stand the test of time. Cut it down to the great tracks and you get an album that gets hyped in every way, is talked about for years and elevates you to another status as a rapper because the quality of your catalog is the what people use to judge the greats. If Kendrick had put 8 extra songs on GKMC that brought down the quality of the album he wouldn't be nearly as popular or praised as he is today.

This is mostly a personality thing, I'm more of the liking perfect short albums as opposed to long albums because I tend to get profoundly bored no matter how good the album is halfway through. And it works both ways cause long albums tend to be flubbed out by unnecessary padding or filler whereas too short albums only have a select few songs that are great and the obligatory single track...

But generally speaking I'd rather listen to illmatic rather than the cool.

Plus this is the age of the internet where you still get the extra music because the artist can just release the songs anyway

i was gunno cite madvillainy as a plus for the long albumd but most songs are like a minute to 2 minutes in length which makes the fragmented layout of the album rly addicting... so yeah taly another point for brevity and conciseness.

We don't hate him, at least I don't. But Yeezus isn't that good and in that album's case having less songs was a bad thing because it made the bad tracks/moments stand out too much. If people can let little lines and moments in Eminem songs ruin WHOLE songs for them then Yeezus shouldn't be getting any praise because there's something wrong in every song. At least one thing he fucks up on, it could be a totally amazing track and then just...gets weird, pointless, and stupid.

I used to LOVE Kanye West and stood up for him every chance I could but he has been an arrogant fuck since his album came out. He thinks he's the second Jesus Christ and he's nowhere near. And then the raps, the music, have all been lackluster as well. I used to like the hell out of Kanye and respected him for doing him but Yeezus just seems like one huge...gimmick. :(

Run the Jewels is 12 songs but 37 minutes
The Slim Shady EP is 36 minutes.

So, no, there is absolutely nothing wrong with Kanye making an album with 8 songs ESPECIALLY if it means more thought out songs with more layers and a longer "kanye creative process" like All of the Lights and Runaway.

That said, i think the sentiment that he is only making music to "stay relevant" is very true. On Sway in the morning HE gave the relevance triangle (cant be bothered by the details) and on the breakfast club he conceded that on sight was "unfinished" and yeezus was "like a listening session". His fans and us casual fans should be concerned that the 8 songs structure is less motivated by "design" but more by "the pressure to maintain influence.
