Scoop DeVille speaks on what would have been the "Detox" version of "The Recipe," says it featured Damian Marley.

Although the Dr. Dre-assisted “The Recipe” serves as a single from Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d city album, according to producer Scoop DeVille, the record was initially intended for placement on Dre’s long delayed album, Detox.

While speaking with Vlad TV about the lack of Dr. Dre-produced records on good kid, m.A.A.d city, Scoop revealed that in addition to initially serving as a Dre record, “The Recipe” originally featured Damian Marley. Although Scoop says the record was “perfect” for Dre, the former N.W.A. lyricist was concerned about creating another weed record.

“I don’t know. I think he’s trying to keep what he’s doing a secret,” Scoop said. “It’s actually funny because the records Kendrick was rapping on like ‘The Recipe,’ that was a Detox record. So, originally who had got the record was Dre. We put it in Dre’s hand. He hit me back like ‘Yo man, what’s up with these records?’ There was like another record we did too that he was feeling. He was like ‘Yo man, you think I need another weed record or something about weed referencing?’ In the song, ‘smoking weed…,’ and we’re talking about that. And I’m like ‘Of course. You need that because this is you. This song is perfect for you. I only hear you on this.’ So, he had got Damian Marley on the record originally and that opened up a whole ‘nother door too. To doing Jamaican music and rasta stuff, reggae stuff.”

The absence of any Dr. Dre-produced beats on ScHoolboy Q’s upcoming album, Oxymoron was also discussed during Scoop’s interview. Unsure of why exactly Oxymoron is without any production from Dre, Scoop questioned if a song produced from Dre is something an artist would have to work up to.

“I never really seen Dre with ScHoolboy like that, right. More so with Kendrick and Dre,” he said. “Or at least not yet. I don’t know how that works. Maybe it’s like you gotta work up to get to him or something. I don’t know how that works. But there camp is good. They got a great, solid camp. All the rappers are dope. They got a great production team.”

In addition to producing Kendrick’s “The Recipe,” Scoop also produced the good kid, m.A.A.d city track, “Poetic Justice.” The Los Angeles-based producer spoke briefly on his work on good kid, m.A.A.d city during an interview with Bootleg Kev prior to the album’s release in October 2012.

"We've got a few singles in the pipeline also for [Kendrick's album],” Scoop said. “I think everybody is going to be pretty amazed once they hear everything, 'cus Kendrick is real talented and it's just cool to be a part of the movement with Dre."
